TRIP 05/05/2012

THE TRIP AT MILK-WITH VINTAGE VINYL-SESSION 86 PLAYLIST FOR THE SESSION ON 5th MAY 2012. MORE PLAYLISTS AT www.jimz.biz , CLICK ON JIMZ PLAYLISTS-TRIP. NEXT SESSION ON SATURDAY JUNE 2nd, another bank holiday special. BCNU-Hopefully/Jim Well this night has taken so many turns over the last nine years, that eventually I got around to playing a lot more 90’s tunes than usual. The reason for playing some IDM, came out of thinking that as it was Mayday, then some Derrick May should get on. This then lead from classic Detroit techno to thinking that what followed-“intelligent dance music” from the 90’s-should get dropped. During the 90’s I really sold out, and most of my mobile gigs were top 40, even though I was collecting IDM, especially the Warp label, but not playing out with it. So tunes that have never been on before found their way onto the turntables at session 86 during the first few hours. Of course all plans change, and the night later on, as expected turned into a Beastie Boys fest., obviously for sad reasons. It is almost as if the night divides into two, with the first two to three hours, when it is a little quieter, being more like a radio show, and more self indulgent. However when the bar fills it turns more into a party tune session. I mentioned in my handout on the night that I have have played out through more dance music genres over the last 50 years than I care to remember, and if I had the time at my late stage in life, I could play a different genre every night of the week. However the IDM section was a pleasure, even though “recent” for me, and makes me think that maybe a night more devoted to it would really work. I also have some plans to bring back my “jazzisnotafourletterword” night NO ROOM FOR SQUARES, which ran at the afroba for four years. I also am still involved in two 60’s dance music nights per month elsewhere, and private parties, so just when I should be slowing down, I am busier than ever! The next session is a week later than usual (although I am back with Andrew on MAY 31st for TRACKS and GROOVES), to fit with the third Bank Holiday in a row that I have undertaken at MILK. Even though it is the Jubilee weekend, I must try to stay well clear of playing Queen, and do not forget to keep coming back to MILK, now that it is open seven nights a week. BCNU-Hopefully and do not forget Melodies and Memories at MILK on May 27th./Jim
