60'S SOULTIME 14/04/2012
60’s SOUL TIME –WITH THE ORIGINAL VINTAGE VINYL-PLAYLIST FOR THE SESSION ON 14/4/12, AT THE QUEENS ARMS, GREAT KNOLLYS STREET, READING, WITH MARTIN, BRIAN and JIM. NEXT SESSION ON SATURDAY MAY 12th, 7.30 to LATE.
Well for an evening of the authentic sound of a 60’s soul discotheque, by the gentlemen who were there playing the very tunes, four different venues for this night in as many months has been a bit of a nightmare. However let’s hope the superbly refurbished back room at the Queens, is going to be our final resting place! So the second Saturday each month is the date to note. This could be the start of something small ! Thanks to all those who turned out for the session, which sounds a delight on the playback recording. TRIP 07/04/12
Well we went with the session a week later than usual because I was at the NEC, with a memorabilia fair, but the Mighty AC, did the session for me on the last Saturday, and a great job he made of it, if the playlist is anything to go by. His next night TRACKS and GROOVES is at MILK on 26 th., APRIL, with playlists on the T. and G. facebook page.
So I usually try to sum up the session, but how can you describe a night that goes from spiritual jazz to meatloaf!
I intended for an easter “theme” and got a few on, but generally the night, which was a very busy one, just wandered off as it usually does into all sorts of directions. The plot always has been to play soul related music from the 40’s to the 90’s, but we often wander off into a little rock/indie, when the mood and the crowd take us (too many years of me running a mobile !). I had a box of hip hop close to those waiting to be served, so they dug thru’ it and that lead to a lot of requests going on. The recording of the session sounds ok, and you can sense the vibe during the last two hours, when I really was flinging them on, and not talking quite as much “as usual”
Tim has, in a few short months, taken the bar to a whole new level, and it’s great to see the events board on the rear wall full of gigs and happenings.
So onward and upward, BCNU-Jim
DONALD BYRD---CRISTO REDENTOR, first with an easter theme from a great 60’s blue noter.
DAVID AXELROD---A DIVINE IMAGE/THE SICK ROSE/WARNING PART 2, with a 1960’s Radio London jingle “go to the church of your choice overlaid”. Then three from the man with a lot of spiritual life in him, as well as beats!
AIR---DIRTY TRIP, anything with trip in the title.
GRANT GREEN---JOSHUA FIT DE BATTLE ON JERICHO, back to the bible and another great 60’s blue noter.
GENE HARRIS---SUMMER, THE FIRST TIME, just love this 70’s blue note funkjazzer.
FREDDIE HUBBARD/AL JARREAU---LITTLE SUNFLOWER, summer is on the way so on goes this much played classic.
MARVIN GAYE---WHAT’S GOING ON, well!
BONNIE TYLER/MIKE OLDFIELD---ISLANDS, no idea why this got on, other than jess has a thing about bonnie tyler and I cannot go on playing “total eclipse”.
GARBAGE---MILK, our new “theme”
McDONALD and GILES---BIRDMAN, THE REFLECTION, with the flintstones “you can’t go back in time” sample overlaid, superb reflective tune.
CHOCOLATE MILK---TIME MACHINE, another theme, with the lp sleeve to drool over!
PSYCHONAUTS---TIME MACHINE PART 2, needed a bit of a break, so fifteen minutes of this great mix-up goes on.
J. DILLA---DONUTS EXTRACTS, requested.
ORSON WELLES---I KNOW WHAT IT IS TO BE YOUNG, my theme?
DJ SPINNA—WATCH DEES-INSTRUMENTAL, don’t really play enough spinna.
SUNTREADER---ZIN ZAN, tried this one at tracks and grooves a few weeks earlier, great beats jazz from what appear to be a prog. band from 40 years ago.
RUNAWAYS---INTRO/LEVITATION, one I used to start my set with.
THELONIOUS MONK---CRISS CROSS, requested as an easter tune!!
TERRY CALLIER---LOVE THEME FROM SPARTACUS, a proper easter tune.

MACEO AND THE MACKS---ACROSS THE TRACKS, jb related, and quite a lot of interest in it.
BILL WITHERS---USE ME, requested, and I went with the “live” version.
A TRIBE CALLED QUEST---MOTIVATOR, requested.
DE LA SOUL---A ROLLER SKATING JAM NAMED SATURDAY, always gets on, when the bar is full.

THE SMITHS---PANIC, and another, where I usually hang myself.

MOS DEF---BODY ROCK, requested.
PRINCE---LITTLE RED CORVETTE, requested.
APHEX TWIN---ANALOGUE BUBBLEBATH, requested.

Then to finish the usual mix up of film/tv tunes, dr. who, a- team, ghostbusters, star wars, batman etc.
JACKSONS---NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE, who sez!
ESTHER PHILLIPS---JUST SAY GOODBYE, 60’s club rude classic
BUGS BUNNY---THAT’S ALL FOLKS (except for bonnie tyler’s eclipse, which followed, but did not get recorded !)
The trip is a “jazzisnotafourletterwordandididnotgettoplaytheeastertunemottthehooplesrollawaythestone” production, 2012.
