TRIP 19/12/2009

The Trip at the afroba with vintage vinyl --Session 57--19/12/2009,
Playlist and Jim’s Ramblings. More at www.jimz.biz
I have often mentioned before that this night is a little like Deal or No Deal, ie. there is a format of sorts, but each show is different, and again session 57 was just that. For the Saturday nearest to Christmas not to play a single Xmas tune was quite some feat, but as I am doing another evening on Christmas Eve., then I am sure the opposite will apply and you will get an excess of Xmassy stuff then. The “plot” for this one however was to record another cd’s worth of material to add to the six new ones I hope to have for you at the January session. The theme following the articles in the new issue of WAXPOETICS, was to record a Blaxploitation films one, and I did just that during the first hour and a quarter. However about three hours into the evening my minidisk player turned itself off spookily and I thought that I may have lost the recording, but someone was looking after me and the recording was preserved thankfully. With respect to WAXPOETICS the other theme this issue is Library music and I hope on Thursday to record a cd’s worth of that as well to make up to 8 the new batch of cd’s to be made available at the January session.
The evening generally was very up and down with the bar filled one moment and then going quiet and then getting busy again, and request wise it was hip hop and soul generally in demand so that’s what we did, finishing slightly earlier without me having to pack all the equipment away which was pure heaven. Andrew was down to guest but could not make it and sent a lovely mix cd. for me to dish out as competition prizes, with at least five being won. Don’t forget this session gets played back at the afroba during January. So onward and upward to this thursday then an afro break until the January 2010 session on the 31st,

TRIP 28/11/2009

the trip at the afroba, SESSION 56, with vintage vinyl-28/11/09, PLAYLIST and Jims RAMBLINGS.
Hey, after last months quiet session this one got us back up there again, with a one stage the afroba almost rammed, to its rafters. Two points to make for anyone wishing to take the dj route. The first is, and this is a constant topic amongst those of us that have been playing out for a while, the tunes. Next to a decent sound system, tunes are the only other pre-requisite, and the fact that when dj’img you must determine if you are there to educate or entertain, but you must communicate by either method. I honestly think that the plot for the trip is to try to do both, but uppermost you must entertain. It’s no good playing endless terrific music if the customers have no idea what the tunes are, and if you do you must mix in some music they know. You must also sum up the audience to see if they are listening. I have found over the years, just by looking at people, to make an attempt to ascertain what they would like to hear. At this session it was obvious early on that some ”female orientated music” would be required for one group, and I struggled to find anything too modern to cope with that. Ok this is a vintage evening, but it’s nice to be able to keep everybody happy!
The other weird thing is intuition!I started with a French tune, not knowing then that a little later a lovely French visitor, would ask me to play some more tunes from his country. So basically if you are out there with an audience don’t hit them with a bedroom/radio dj set, unless the customers are very clearly attending for an evening like that and expect to be “educated”. Now the other point. Equipment. At another session recently one of my turntables slowed down to a stop. I banged it a few times and it got me through the evening. I checked it at home and it still worked ok., but and this is a sign of very old age, I took a spare deck with me just in case! So an hour or so in this session the same one started to play up again. Quick as I could I switched to the other deck, and turntabled “Panic” by the Smiths on the dodgy one just to try it again after thumping it a few times! Sure enough it was panic as it did not correct itself (all this is evident on the playback mini disc, with the odd few gaps/slowdowns), and so I had to cable in the spare one to get us through the evening, which it did, bless it. I always take with me a spare amp., but fortunately this is the first time an extra turntable was with me, as I often joke it’s possible to get by with one turntable providing you can manage to talk in between switching the discs over, but I would not commend it.
The planned bits like lots of new tunes/the ”obituary” section, plus only one that gilles played recently did get on. The rest like the french connection, afroba faves and the mobile disco-with lots of dancing, well away from the decks, towards the end was the “improvised” bit.
Please note that during December you get to hear an extra session. The “normal”, if that’s the right word, session is on DECEMBER 19th, which will be an up for it session but without too much Xmassy stuff, with Andrew guesting. Then on CHRISTMAS EVE, DECEMBER 24th, you get the more mellow christmas pies, jingle bell jazz, Xmas tunes, slightly more laid back session to ease you into Christmas day, bcnu-hopefully/Jimbo jambo jazzbo.

Well another fabbo sesh, not quite as full as usual but several new faces and a pretty good vibe. Smiler was fresh from the Fleurs book launch/event of the year at the 100 Club a week earlier and had slipped in a dj’ing trip to Spain in between. Dan was also on hand with his dj’ing stint at the 100 Club to add to his cv, and Keith made the session this month with his jazzy moments, which of course didn’t get written down! Also Nick joined us for a set having returned to the wheels of steel after 20 years. Also in the place was the man himself Mr. Keith Guster fresh from drumming up a storm at the Fleurs reunion. The Fleurs evening is pretty well covered on YOU TUBE, with Al MacKenzie, Chris Farlowe and Sharon Tandy currently showing. I managed to get a few tunes onto audio on the night and played back two during my “live” Fleurs and Connections set, which sounds pretty good, for me anyway !, and it might be possible to press it up as a freebie cd. Damian could not make the evening but he bust several guts to get the 100 Club evening organised, which means I must get him a new gut for Xmas. Our next sesh. is our annual Xmas knees and everything else up on DECEMBER 17th. I started this evening half an hour earlier than normal and because we had some after work customers in kept the tunes to slightly more 60’s top 40.

TRIP 31/10/2009

the TRIP AT THE AFROBA, READING WITH VINTAGE VINYL-SESSION 55-THE LAST SAT. EACH MONTH-PLAYLIST FOR 31st OCTOBER 2009 AND JIMS RAMBLINGS. MORE AT HYPERLINK "http://www.jimz.biz" www.jimz.biz
The trip session 55, 323 minutes and 22 seconds of some old bloke playing gramophone records. I feel like that’s the only comment I should make after the first session for ages that didn’t quite produce the afro vibe due to the bar only being about half full. However those of you that did come were exposed to much of the same set that I would have played anyway, and the playback sounds pretty much ok, so lets hope that when it gets played back at the afroba, more ears get to hear it! It seems like the first time for ages that with Halloween falling on a Saturday, everybody wanted to dress up and whiz around town rather than stay in one spot. Those that did attend were “treated”, or tricked into free poundshop horror sweeties that were “natural and artificial”! Lets hope the nhs can cope with the aftermath! I also put up a few classic original horror posters to add to the atmosphere. Although quite a few requests came in it was not as many as usual and I managed to get most of the “planned” tunes on. These included a few Gilles had played recently/Wah Wah Watson in the new issue of Waxpoetics/ Ronnie Scotts jazz club 50 th anniversary/ Several tunes on jonny trunks label due to his visit to reading the night before/ Lots of Halloween samples/horror tunes with a “God” one at the end to “balance” the session and spare me going to confession!. I did miss playing the new Waxpoetics single , the Fleur De Lys tunes and tracks from trunks first release back in 1995, which I will get on next month on NOVEMBER 28th, bcnu or not! Count Jimula (dj zero not dj hero).

BOBBIE (BOBBY) GRAHAM…ZOOM, WIDGE AND WAG, the night was dedicated to this late great and very prolific session drummer.

CLUB RUDE at the BLAGRAVE ARMS, READING-15/10/09-PLAYLIST and JIM’S RAMBLINGS
MORE AT www.jimz.biz
I often use a speech sample from a Flintstones lp at my other sessions which says” You can’t go back in time, today is today and yesterday is gone forever, you can’t turn back the clock”. Well I beg to differ. Having been there for most of this music/atmosphere the first time around, all I have to do is shut my eyes and I am back there
( There are one or two people however who wish I had stayed there! ) The Blagrave are also very happy with the evening as we continue to pull in slightly more business, due to our great regulars and newbies, than the Goths.
This session was another landmark one as Smiler had with him promo copies of RARE MOD VOL.2, all unreleased tracks, that Damian and himself have compiled for Acid Jazz, together with a copy of the Fleurs 4 track ep which complements the book on the band the geezers will see published in November ( the rumours surrounding the guestlist for the 100 Club launch abound, but its safe to say that as an added bonus at least 2 60’s club icons will also give their vocal chords an outing backed by the Small Fakers). Keith could not make the session and Smiler got away with dropping Lulu, one I would never have contemplated, until I heard it blasting out, superbo!. This gave me the opportunity, but I was going to play them anyway!, to drop The Doc Thomas Group and Mott the Hoople, for personal reasons. Dan also dropped the superb Manish Boys for I think the first time. So the next time I type up one of these, after the session on NOVEMBER 19th, the 100 Club Fleurs gig will have happened and will get fully reported ( Also see the current RECORD COLLECTOR for a great article on the book and the band). BCNU- Not the Legendary Jim

TRIP 27/09/2009

The trip at the afroba, with vintage vinyl, Session 54, 27/9/09, Playlist and Ramblings with Jim.
I honestly do not think I will ever get tired of this night, and lets hope its runs forever-if only!
The ability to play what I please and that which seems to please the great crowd we get in is a great joy. It also fascinates me that although we get our regulars, and bless them, where would I be without them, we also get groups of new faces. At this session these newbies seemed to be on top form as most of the prizes went their way. The “plot” for this one I wrote down and intended to cover the following-Autumn tunes/Rashied Ali/Beatles or cover versions/The various reunions coming up-Lulu and Chaka, Mott the Hoople, Cliff and the Shads, The Nolans!(I managed to “forget” the last two)/The Dells with their member John Carter recently passing. I also wanted to pay respects to a very dear friend of mine who passed away recently. For once I managed to get most of this in, (although the tribute to Ronnie Scotts jazz club reaching 50 was missed), deal with requests, and finished the evening showing some of the afroba ladies how easy it is to bung records on. So another one bites the dust, with our Halloween session in October falling on the very night, the 31st, so come spooked up, and don’t forget this entire recorded session, music only without my chat, gets played back during October at the afroba, the only place to trip out to in reading. More playlists/ details at www.jimz .biz---bcnu hopefully-Jim.

CLUB RUDE at the BLAGRAVE ARMS READING, THE THIRD THURSDAY EVERY MONTH WITH VINTAGE VINYL, PLAYLIST FOR SESSION HELD ON 17/09/09, AND JIMS RAMBLINGS. MORE PLAYLISTS/DETAILS AT www.jimz.biz.
Well another session that although there were a lot of regulars elsewhere, seemed to hit the spot, with lots of new faces and an evening that took advantage of the later finishing time. Dan was on his hols so joining the Smilesmeister, Keith and myself was Mick who dropped some great tunes but didn’t to write most of them down. I did manage to help the old boy out by writing down his first set, but missed the others. “Rules of rude” subsection 3 paragraph 9, clearly states all guests will weald the pen as well as the styli!! So the night was generally a little like last month ie. not so Ska. dominated. I suppose however with the launch of the Fleurs book getting ever closer the British bands are getting a bit more of a look in. Also if you have not got tickets for the book launch, get ‘em quick, as it looks like the evening couldl be riddled with celebs, look for clues in this playlist! - WITH VINTAGE VINYL-PLAYLIST and RAMBLINGS. MORE at www.jimz.biz
Well I think rammed is the word, with this year our first at the Blagrave, being just that. You hardly had room to swing your thing! Mr. Edwards, who travels such a distance to be with us, bless him, joined Smiler, Dan , Keith and myself on the steels of wheel and we all just about managed to get through the main part of the evening without turntabling too much Xmassy stuff. Smiler wheeled out his competition to name 50 personalities, and the winners the Bracknell boys managed 46, with a consolation prize going to the best named team
” Quizteam Keeler!”.
Also we managed to dish out over 30 free cd’s to our lovely regulars, bless ‘em, plus a few fleurs “live” cd’s with two going to the winners of the joe meek competition. Keith G. joined us again fresh from a name check on Brian Matthews show the previous Saturday. Smiler also had on hand copies of his and Damians book on the Fleurs, which is selling well, so bag one before it’s sold out.
The playlist this time is a little short, as I am, due to lack of pens and toooo much booze (the bar took more than double their usual takings), so starting below are the tracks from the free cd, followed by about half the tunes played on the evening.

TRIP 29/08/2009

the trip at the afroba, session 53, with vintage vinyl, playlist and ramblings, with jim-29/08/09.
Crazy mixed up or what!, another session that took this evening in yet another direction. I’m beginning to wonder how many different directions there must be left? What is great though is that I convince myself there is a bit of a plot to this night, often in segments there is not and jockeying the discs to suit is a little like improvising. The plot for this one anyway was to play a little less jazz for once, but to attempt to pay homage to Woodstock, with some classic 60’s rock to counter the Reading festival that was in town and was featuring zilch wrinklies. Also to quell the jacko mania that has taken over the decks the last few months to pay respects to Rod Temperton, he of mj composing fame, plus feature, and little did I know that we were going to be swamped by our brazillian friends, brazillian music inspired by the new Waxpoetics. We also overran slightly due to latecomers celebrating a birthday, you really must come earlier!, I’m on the steels of wheel from 6.30 to Midnight. Also big thanks for the applause at the end, but really its only some old bloke bunging records on, who refuses to be labelled a legend-honest. Next session is on SEPTEMBER 26th our annual autumn leaves night. More playlists at www.jimz.biz, bcnu- hopefully/Jim

RUDE 20/08/2009

CLUB RUDE-NOW AT THE BLAGRAVE ARMS, READING, PLAYLIST AND RAMBLINGS, 20th AUGUST 2009. WITH Smiler/Dan/Keith and Jim (who is responsible for this playlist and lots more!)
MORE PLAYLISTS/DETAILS AT www.jimz.biz
Well first up a big thanks to Readings Goths who gave up their regular Thursday evening at THE BLAGRAVE ARMS to let Rude return to the venue in some style, with only a weeks notice! The general vibe seemed to be that the venue was on par with the Coopers-whom we thank very much for letting us play there- and slightly more “intimate”, and with a little more room to shake your rump. The other bonus is that in future we can run on a little later than 11.00 if we wish, so lets see how things pan out. Also for the first time ever virtually all of the tunes were written down, over 90 of them, meaning yet more work for yours truly! I have now played back the mini disc recording about 4 times and it really does sound sweet, especially Keiths early set, and the “trend” towards a little more Atlantic/Stax material, which must be due to Smilers/Damiens ‘fluence with regard to the recently completed Fleurs book. We are also looking towards setting up another night Club Nitty Gritty at the same venue, with generally the same feel, so watch this space.

TRIP 25/07/2009

The trip@the afroba, with vintage vinyl, Session 52, 25/07/09, PLAYLIST and Ramblings with Jim.
Well after a whole month at my other gigs of playing nothing but endless mj it was a pleasure to return to the afroba and enjoy a virtual mj free evening, especially as at session 51, he also dominated the evening. Lets let him rest in peace now, and we will not pay tribute again until he passes away the next time! So mj may have been the theme last month, but this month we kept it newsworthy again with a “Moon/Space” theme running through the evening, due to the anniversary of the moon landing. Also for the first time I attempted to record some material for a future cd well into the evening, when the place was jumping, rather than early on when I can concentrate more as things are a little quieter. As such I did not want to do a full 75 minute mix, as we needed later mid evening to get some of our faves on, so I kept the “MOON-MIX”, 12 tracks to approx 45 minutes, and I will fill it out with another shorter 30 minute mix when we get it to cd. The evening which as usual got busy between 9.30 to 11.00 ( you really must come earlier and stay later ! ), embraced a lot of new “old” tunes, many requests, and some of our classics. This time there were no “accidents”-see the playlist for session 51-and we only produced one competition winner even though I did three. Thanks also to most of our regular regulars who seem to have the last Saturday firmly in their diaries ( diaries!, what are they ? ). Plus don’t forget the session gets played back during the week at the afroba, without my chat and this playlist on hand. The next session is our annual “Sod the Reading festival” night on AUGUST 29th. Be there or be somewhere else!!
