No Room For Squares 13/10/2006

NO ROOM FOR SQUARES JAZZ OR ISIT?-SESSION 34, afroba , Reading-13th OCT 2006. SECOND FRIDAY EACH MONTH. PLAYLIST / NEWSLETTER.
Well the move to a friday certainly seems to have worked, even though the original groundrules are being breached a little and my interpretation of a boombastic jazz style is being stretched to the very limit. It was a packed bar virtually all night with a very busy start, a slightly quiet middle and a very busy end to the evening with music to reflect just that. The requests I was being asked for early on I did not have with me but a quick trip back to the shop soon solved that and War and Gil Scott-Heron therefore got turntabled. The interest in the tunes was about as good as it gets with a build to the evening of TUNE 2,000 at 10.45. Also as we move into a new scheme of things for the evening this playlist will change format and become a double page layout with the tunes now being listed one to a line for ease of reading. There will also be a longer preamble closer to the newsletter that I hand out on the night.
Right, Lets take tune 2,00 first which I got to via playing TUNE 500/TUNE 1,000 prior to it. The newsletter hinted that it would be British, be a well known tune-if not the version, and would be by someone I had met. It would also reflect the night, ie slightly more commercial. By a great coincidence the day after I chose it eight days earlier, it got turntabled the following night at the KPM session in the interval at the Jazzcaf, plus John Cameron the arranger conducted a piece on the same evening so fate was on my side. Therefore between the three tunes-Coltrane, proper jazz-Dee Dee Bridgewater, more mainstream, and TUNE 2,000, Whole Lotta Love by session geezers supreme CCS, very commercial, I hope to balance the evening in future. Tune 2,000 went down so well I got asked later to repeat it. All this fitted with the evenings other "special", some KPM/Music Library stuff to pay homage to the BEST gig I have ever been to the previous friday. Hawkshaw/Mansfield/Bennett etc. were in the most cracking of form making the KPM Music Library Allstars, Megastars. Bless them. Their tunes I turntabled are marked with a *. The rest of the "planned" part of the evening took in some faves from previous sessions, Blue Note, Britjazz, Skajazz and some Film/TV tunes. The rest I just "improvised" or "jockeyed" as is the case. So lets hope that this cracking start to the second friday session was not just a blip and that we can maintain it, and if you want to know why I played Everlasting Love you will have to come along to the TRIP on SATURDAY OCTOBER 28th when more music library gets played as well as vintage music on vinyl across an even larger canvas.........BCNU/ Jim ( DJ BABY BOOMER )
