THE TRIP-SESSION 95-WITH VINTAGE VINYL-AT MILK, READING. PLAYLIST FOR THE SESSION ON JANUARY 26th 2013, WITH JIM. NEXT SESSION ON FEBRUARY 23rd-ALWAYS ON THE LAST SATURDAY. More playlists at www.jimz.biz  -click on links, jimz playlists then the night. ALSO THE SESSION IS AVAILABLE TO LISTEN TO ON MIXCLOUD-Jim B. Donovan/Trip 95.
Well yet another “different but the same” session. The first for a while that the bar was nicely full for the entire evening, with a lot of attendees taking in the full five and a half hours! Loads of tunes not turntabled before, and the “come and choose the tunes”, peaking with the hip-hoppers in, pulling out some great vintage selections towards the end of the evening. I am back again at MILK on Tuesday Feb. 5th, with NO ROOM FOR SQUARES, which has a “jazz” in the very broadest sense flavour to it, which is now why less is being played at the trip. I also drop a few tunes at Andrew Carlins great night TRACKS and GROOVES, on the last Thursday each month, at MILK. Well worth a visit, and checking its facebook page. Well that’s it, hopefully by the next session my beard will either have blossomed-or vanished!

NO ROOM FOR SQUARES SESSION 57, AT MILK, READING. PLAYLIST FOR THE SESSION, WITH VINTAGE VINYL, ON 8th JANUARY 2013. MORE PLAYLISTS AT www.jimz.biz - NEXT SESSION ON TUESDAY FEBRUARY 5th.
Well a session that seemed to flow very well. Not too much straight jazz, but I seemed to hit a groove jazz theme early on and stuck with it. Thanks to members of the Oxford Arts Group, who came the distance, and made up for lack of numbers. It was a bit of a “Zoot Money” night (the story I have scribed many times, about how Zoot and his seven piece band traveled all the way from London to Malvern, to play a gig that only myself and eleven others-in a ballroom fit for 400-attended, but the man still put on a great show as if the place was packed). I was up against January, the weather, and a live jazz gig at the Retreat, because the evening was a week later than usual, but the next session is back on the first Tuesday in February and then March 5 th, with Smiler and Keith undertaking a jazz special at MILK on Saturday March 9th. Looks like jazz is back, except for some of us it’s never been away- a little like vinyl!
I attempted for the first time using Audacity to record the session on the laptop, in the hope that I can share it quickly, as opposed to the recordings I have done on my minidisk player, which take ages to upload. I started a little early, to check out the recording, and finished a little early just as the “fashionably late”, were arriving. I only name checked the tunes on the hour each hour, and the recording sounds “broadcast standard”, for me anyway.
So if you were not there you may get the chance to listen back. Keep an eye on my Facebook page-Jim B. Donovan- or the MILK, Reading page. Don’t forget the one word jazz poem “Listen”.
BCNU Hopefully-Jim ( Dr. Jazzicus Hep)

GIL SCOTT HERON---GIVE HER A CALL, a couple of guys in early checking out the copy of Spirits on the wall display, so on  this goes.
AHMAD JAMAL---GENERIC WALK, off to see him at the barbican next month, can’t wait!
RAMSEY LEWIS---KUFANYA MAPENZI, mixed nicely out of the previous.
BUNKY LEWIS---MY BABE, really nice example of early “mod jazz” from 1960.
AHMAD JAMAL---SPARTACUS, ahmad again with this great tune, well known for its lateef and callier versions.
BURT BACHARACH---SOUTH AMERICAN GETAWAY dropped this at the christmas trip to some interest, a gp fave!
PAT METHENY---ARE YOU GOING WITH ME, start of the evening proper!
BOBBI HUMPHREY---YOU MAKE ME FEEL SO GOOD, for kirsten, who always supports me!
ANDY BEY---CELESTIAL BLUES, pretty random one, but with 8 boxes with me to choose from, not difficult to improvise.
UFO---I’LL BET YOU THOUGHT I’D NEVER FIND YOU, 90’s a-jazz
KOOL AND THE GANG---WILD AND PEACEFUL, “disco band” whose  roots were in jazz and this proves it
DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER---ALL BLUES, great vocal version of miles tune.
JULIE DRISCOLL---SEASON OF THE WITCH, continued the female vocal “theme”.
ANGELA BOFILL---PEOPLE MAKE THE WORLD GO ‘ROUND, slighty “up” version from the late 70’s.
IRENE REID---MOONDANCE, another female delight.
JOE HARRIOTT---HUM DONO, first cult brit. jazz of the night
DAVID BOWIE---VOLARE, to celebrate his birthday, his unusual version from the absolute beginners film.
DONALD BYRD---DOMINOES, jazzfunktastic!
ELVIS PRESLEY---FEVER, another birthday boy, and as close to “jazz” as the man got.
ELLA FITZGERALD---SUNSHINE OF YOUR LOVE, classic cream tune gets ellared.
LIZA MINELLI---LOVE FOR SALE, superb jazzdancer.
STAN GETZ---NIGHT IN TUNISIA, almost the first proper jazz of the night.
STEELY DAN---DO IT AGAIN, jazzorizit ?
ROY AYERS---LOVE WILL BRING US TOGETHER, never forget to play a roy.
LOUIS ARMSTRONG---THE CREATOR HAS AN MASTER PLAN, his spiritual groovy one, with leon thomas, another gp fave.
INCOGNITO/CARLEEN ANDERSON/RAMSEY LEWIS---TROUBLE DON’T LAST ALWAYS, last played this on my britjazz night years ago.
GRANT GREEN---MY FAVOURITE THINGS/A DAY IN THE LIFE/JOSHUA FIT DE BATTLE OB JERICHO, got chatting about grant to our visitors from oxford, so on go three in a row.
GREGORY PORTER---1960 WHAT, thanks chris for this, my most modern record.
FATS WALLER---I’M CRAZY ‘BOUT MY BABY, for rory our bar steward for the night.
BOSS TRES BIEN---QUARTET TRES BIEN, jazz revival tune.
LES McCANN/EDDIE HARRIS---COMPARED TO WHAT, played for claude nobs, the instigator of the montreux festival, who currently is very ill, possibly the best known recording from the festival in 1969.
THE NEW DAVE BRUBECK QUARTET---UNSQUARE DANCE, this one with “stevie wonder” overtones never ceases to create interest, dave goes electric with his children in 1978.
AHMAD JAMAL/GARY BURTON---ONE, amazing vid. on you- tube for this one, just watch how ahmad with his back to the band keeps the tune going.
UFO---FLYING SAUCER, instrumental remix by modaji

JACK McDUFF---JIVE SAMBA, both keith emerson and myself bought this in 1964, and it’s his fave organ lp which gave him a career!
PADDY ROBERTS---THE BIG DJ, finish with another gp’er, that I bought originally over 50 years ago, the message is in the lyrics.
NO ROOM FOR SQUARES IS A “JAZZISNOTAFOURLETTERWORD” PRODUCTION FOR MILK, READING, THE FIRST IN 2013.

TRIP 31/12/2012

THIS IS THE HOUR THAT I CONTRIBUTED TO AS PART OF MILKS NEW YEARS EVE SESSION, 2012……
-Well here it is my New Years Eve 1 hour Mix-11.00 to Midnight, taking us from 12 into 13, at MILK, Reading-
--Compared to the other guys playing on the night it all sounds a little ”old fashioned”, but it was put together as a tribute to James Hamilton, who undertook the amazing nye mixes on Radio 1 in the 80’s.
--I had to chop mix quite a lot to get all the tunes in, and I tried to turntable a lot of styles, House, Hip Hop, Disco, Drum and Bass-with Peter Nice sounding really great-, Easi, Funk, Downbeat, 60’s Soul, Mod Revival, Techno, and Silly.
-- Also because I was only playing up to midnight, I had to drop early a couple of tunes that I normally play after like Acid Folk, and The Salsoul Orchestra, which was always James method post midnight, often playing proper Scottish dancing.
--I also managed to get in small tributes to Gerry Anderson, Fontella Bass, and Adam Yaunch.
--Even though I had worked out rough timings, I took Donna Summer out because Chris had played her earlier, and “managed”-M’sier Le Cockup- to have a minute to fill before midnight. I managed to fill it by “back playing” Europe and chatting, which I only did during the last 15 minutes and this acted as a countdown anyway, although I originally did not intend to, but took the microphone”just in case”
--So that’s it for 2012, hope you all had a great time, and I look forward to 2013, especially hopefully continuing to play at MILK, which Tim has taken to a whole new level since taking over in February
