Well if you had said to me ten years ago, that I would still be playing out on a Saturday night at a packed bar in the middle of Reading, and playing “jazz” at that, I would have thought it was all a dream. However I think it happened in reality last night. The “plot” was to do a “Sod the Reading Festival “, special and revive my old “jazzorizit” night “No Room For Squares”. Let’s hope after last night that we can get the night back, as I am now able to leave my equipment in situ., and this has already lead to another night starting on the last thursday “Tracks and Grooves”, with the Mighty AC throwing the tunes on. However all good things have a downside. This one is that the equipment I am using is my spare kit, and is not quite, in my view, in spite of masses of testing, up to my normal rig. It seemed to get us through ok however , but I had a glitch with one turntable-that you would hardly notice- but the recording which I could not have set up right only recorded one channel, and that in mono. Plus every other tune has low volume on the playback. It might take some time therefore to copy it for the afroba to play back, and even may not copy well at all, so a month might go missing!
So nice to see a lot of regular faces, and new ones, especially the guy, who said he “had never been to a night like it”. I just hope that was a compliment! Plus lots of interest in the tunes and competitions. Also nice to see Nigel and his wife, who are involved with “jazz in reading”, it could lead to some “live” jazz at the afroba. Tim ibetya popped in towards the end, and photographed nicely for my facebook page. We also had some genuine reading festival mud in the place to add to the atmosphere!!! The night was dedicated to the late Abbey Lincoln, and the next session is back to “normal” on September 25th, with “Tracks and Grooves” the following thursday Sept 30th. Be there or be somewhere else!
