the trip at the afroba, Session 59, with vintage vinyl. Playlist and Jims ramblings, on the
27th Feb 2010. More at www.jimz.biz and Facebook-Jim B. Donovan
Hey 8 years, 230 evenings, 10,000 tunes, and all after I had semi-retired from record playing. Owning up time as well. Quite where the music mix or the vibe comes from is still difficult to describe. I have never been one for attending other dj evenings , certainly up to 10 years back, and never really up to then wanted to get involved in discreet specialist music evenings. Too easy playing one style to an audience there just for that! So for ages I went the mobile route, not knowing what crowd I would be up against. I suppose it was only the diminishing of vinyl towards 2000 that took me off that scene. I can’t help it but playing off anything else just ain’t right. Sorry. “Passionate about vinyl and playing out”, was how someone described me at this session, I’m afraid I concur.
So here we are in 2010, I’m 45 years into this scene, and more than ever thinking how long can I keep it up. If it was not for the fact that with the trip I can play as I please, and what I play seems to create an enthusiastic vibe. Human nature would not be what it is without getting a buzz from at the end of a five and a half hour set acknowledging applause, so many many thanks, its much appreciated.
As much “fun” as it is, you do need to concentrate, keep a musical flow going, sort some sort of sequencing, deal with requests, chat with our great regulars. I can usually assess how well an evening went by the state of the records/filing, and at the end of trip 59 they were in a mess! The session also never really “finishes” either. Once the evening is over there is the “lugging”, typing and posting this, copying mini-discs, and now facebook. Once that’s done its straight to ideas for the next session. These normally come to a head about a week before the night when the tunes I want to play get checked out, but often I go right to the wire. The obvious “mistake” with regard to the “wall display/photos” this month is I so wanted to play some Dennis Wilson, due to the great programme about him the night before, but he didn’t get on. Shame on me!
Apologies as well, but the 8 new cd’s were not ready, but they will be available at the next session or in the shop in the meanwhile. Plus so many thanks to Pete and his lady for trekking all the way from Swindon, I hope it was worth the effort, and a million thanks to Pete for doubling my blue note sevens collection to 40. This man has more than 10 times that amount, bless him, and I thought I was a blue note collector, no competition! This sevens thing however means I must devote more time to them especially as I am in my 45th year of playing out. So at each session for the rest of this year at least one hour devoted to 45’s.
So we finally reached tune 1,000, with the old boy running with it as a “pick of the pops countdown”. It’s too late for a radio career for me but sometimes I think what I attempt is a show for radio but “live”.
Most of what I wanted to cover got on, not as much “African”, and more James Last than expected. Thanks to the mighy ac for pushing me in the hansi direction. I would never have gone for this without a push, but boy did it work. The night was dedicated to Johnny Dankworth and Dale Hawkins, bless them both, and blessed by Gil Scott-Heron’s new LP.. Please note the next session is on APRIL 3rd., a week later than usual,
bcnu-Jimbo Jambo Jazzbo..
GIL SCOTT-HERON…JAZZ MUSIC, DIALOGUE, with hamilton bohannon running under it.

MASSIVE ATTACK…SAFE FROM HARM, 12””instrumental” cut, the first of a few plays.
GANGSTARR…STEP IN THE ARENA, johnny dankworths “responsible” via his samples for gs tonight.
ERYKAH BADU…ON and ON, for Kirsten.
GRANT GREEN…BESAME MUCHO, just got this 60’s latin bluenoter.
STEREOLAB…METRONOMIC UNDERGROUND, always seem drawn back to this one.
BILL WITHERS…CITY OF ANGELS, thanks mpd for keeping bill in the frame, this cuts absolute heaven.
MARSHALL JEFFERSON…OPEN OUR EYES, the spiritual mix, lovely moody detroit “techno”.
MILT JACKSON…OLINGA, another mpd shout, forgot to drop this last month.
INCOGNITO/CARLEEN ANDERSON/HERBIE HANCOCK…TROUBLE DON’T LAST ALWAYS, not played since my british jazz night.
TEDDY PENDERGAST…LIFE IS A SONG WORTH SINGING, if only the furore over teddy death were the same as mj’s.
DORIS DUKE…WOMAN OF THE GHETTO, bonkers cover off 12”.
DION...PURPLE HAZE, thanks mighty ac for dropping this last month.
SARAH VAUGHAN…INNER CITY BLUES, got to this via the james last version!, and great to chat to a lovely nubie who knew his singers.
DION…ABRAHAM, MARTIN and JOHN, still chatting, so cue another from dion.
SARAH VAUGHAN…IMAGINE, back to sarah from her superb mainstream lp.
BILL WITHERS…WHO IS HE AND WHAT IS HE TO YOU, back to still bill
IAN DURY…WAKE UP AND MAKE LOVE TO ME, bit of a “hit” from last month.
MARVIN GAYE...TROUBLE MAN!!!, the other side of the seven of “t plays it cool”, but this ain’t trouble man, need to check this mispress!!
WILLIE BOBO…ITS NOT UNUSUAL, thanks ac for this one last month.
MEL TORME...I’M COMING HOME, dance action and its early!, first of a few from the soundtrack of the film”an education”
FLOYD CRAMER…ON THE REBOUND, and the theme used for the same film, off my original 1962 copy.
DALE HAWKINS…SUZIE Q, the late greats finest hour, with cover versions galore.
ETTA JAMES...I GOT YOU BABE, wailing brass cover from etta during her comeback period in 1968.
DR. JOHN…RIGHT PLACE WRONG TIME, played by gilles a few days earlier.
STONE ROSES…FOOLS GOLD, need a chat to pete so on goes a “longie”
ELLA FITZGERALD…GET READY, did not have “sunshine of your love” with me, so on goes this one.
JOSE FELICIANO…SUZIE Q, a great take on dale hawkins tune, don’t play enough jose.
LOUIS ARMSTRONG…THE CREATOR HAS A MASTER PLAN, another classic gilles dropped in the week.
BOHANNON…ANDREA, time for a hb revival.
JULIE LONDON..SUMMER PLACE, another tune from “an education”, but different version by the divine Julie.
LEE MORGAN…SINCE I FELL FOR YOU, ditto above, but lees great bluenote cover version
MARK MURPHY…STOLEN MOMENTS, hoped to get on “bop for kerouac”, but didn’t, shame, boo!
GIL SCOTT-HERON…I’M NEW HERE, a first for the trip, a brand new record, that hasn’t been off my turntable for the last week, awesome.
LOVE UNLIMITED ORCHESTRA…THEME FROM SHAFT, almost went with percy faiths version!
CAL TJADER…MODESTY BLAISE, cal latins up dankworths 60’s film theme.

JAMES LAST MEGAMIXED BY ME!…bit of a miscue, then INNER CITY BLUES/SILVER MACHINE/TWO TRIBES/ AQUARIUS/AI NO CORRIDA, with mor! later.
BILLY COBHAM…STRATUS, saw him last week at ronnie scotts, the drummer that “inspired” massive attack., into which I easily mixed…
MASSIVE ATTACK…SAFE FROM HARM, the lp version.
GANGSTARR…MOMENT OF TRUTH, one of my all time greats of the hop –hip genre.
…then we moved via brian fayes pop 40 countdown music to tune 9,997, a replay of tune 500…
JOHN COLTRANES…A LOVE SUPREME, “the best jazz record ever”, and when I played this originally at tune 500, I produced a paper justifying my decision.
DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER…AFRO-BLUE, played as tune 1,000 to be an obscure vocal jazzy funky offering with afro in the title, gilles fave and Japanese issue only.
CCS…WHOLE LOTTA LOVE, originally played as tune 2,000, now played as tune 9,999, meant to reflect something british-this was at the height of jazz brittania on bb4 originally-and a cover of a known tune.
FINALLY TUNE 10,000---4-HERO…BLACK GOLD OF THE SUN, much requested and enquired about over the years with the “populist” in me going for the crowd pleasing “modern “version rather than the divine original by rotary connection, oh well that’s show-biz!
GRANT GREEN…A DAY IN THE LIFE, vied with 4-hero for the top tune, much enquired about, but more obscure but with the afro-vibe written right through it.
STEVIE WONDER…GOLDEN LADY, lovely lady asks for this and as we are chatting I produce it in my right hand, oh the joys of proper filing!
EPMD…STRICTLY BUSINESS, andy’s been in my boxes and out comes his fave hip hopper.
DJ SHADOW...NAPALM BRAIN, shads nicks billy cobham’s beats.
OMNI TRIO…TRIPPIN’ ON BROKEN BEATS, request for some drum and bass, from 1996 on moving shadow, no probs.
WINSTONS…AMEN, BROTHER, 1971, the original drum and bass break beat track.
JAMES LAST…TWO TRIBES again/WHEN DOVES CRY/LET THE SUNSHINE IN, with the might ac wearing his last t-shirt, and me doing a competition re. hans.
MASSIVE ATTACK…SAFE FROM HARM(-clip-) then intoUNFINISHED SYMPATHY, not played for ages and usually at the end of the evening.
SPANKY WILSON…SUNSHINE OF YOUR LOVE, to compensate for not having ella’s version.
GIL SCOTT-HERON...THE BOTTLE, 80’s live version, bless him.
ROY BUDD…WHO DARES WINS, for pete, this one got a mention when the evening was coverd by the local press.
GROOVE HOLMES...THEME FROM $6,000, 000 MAN, pre-empting our “usual” film /tv themes end of night tunes
TREVOR BURGESS…THEME FROM DEPT. S, recorded live in a torquay hotel, twisterific.

Well ye olde Blagrave Arms resounded to the sound of ska, and more, yet again with another full house. Special guest Rude Pete ensured the Skaometer was swinging well that way with two great sets. Dan was proudly displaying his mega rare blue cat sevens sleeve, as well as dropping some corkers. Keith played some great ones as well from the handful of sevens he had with him (quality not quantity) but didn’t write any of his tunes down. Smiler came armed from his recent interview with Jimmy James/Count Prince Miller, and the launch of the Mod Chronicles book which he contributed to. I was recovering from a night at Ronnie Scotts the evening previous and raving over the new Gil Scott-Heron lp. The night was dedicated to the late Johnny Dankworth.
So on with the tunes, about 100 listed, and excuse any typos, but I seem to spend half my life typing up playlists, but then I’m grate like that!

TRIP 30/01/2010
The trip at the afroba, Session 58, with vintage vinyl, Playlist and Jims ramblings, 30 th. JANUARY 2010. More at www.jimz.biz and Facebook-Jim Donovan
Well with this session we reached my 230 th., involvement with an evening at the a-bar, and session 58 of the trip. Next month I get to play Tune 10,000, so lots of thinking/ researching going into that one, plus 8 new cd’s should be available. So back to session 58. I had a lot of “themes/artists” worked out to possibly play most of them, especially a Latin/Afro Cuban one to complement the amazing BBC4 documentary the night before, and African tunes to complement the new issue of Waxpoetics. I managed to get a lot of Latin on, but had to cut back on the African stuff due to too many requests for other tunes coming in. However Waxpoetics will still be “current’, next month so hopefully more then. The might AC guested with two great sets of tunes I wish I had thought of, and we gave away more copies of his great cd. I managed to start with virtually a cd’s worth of Cool jazz, again another recent BBC4 show, and dropped some Dre/NWA etc., due to Miles P. Donovans (mpd) “influence”. Matt managed the bar on his tod, in spite of the night being very busy, and I had to finish with my usual load of crap, well worse crap!, to clear the place. This is starting to backfire on me however as Jews For Jesus, is starting to receive some “dance action”, when it’s supposed to shoo you out!!
I am listening to the playback as I type this and every so often I have to stop and think “that was a blinder”, I’ve just done it again to Harold Melvin, and I’m only about two hours in. Right here comes the playlist, and as I’m a virgin to Facebook, keep an eye on my page-Jim Donovan (photo of an old bloke playing drums), as I’m posting photos and details of the nights tunes.
NEXT SESSION IS ON SATURDAY FEBRUARY 27th
bcnu-
Adolf Hitler on Vibes!, or Eric Clapton on ukelele, or the Wild Man of Borneo on bongos, or Quasimodo on bells!, or just jimbo jambo jazzbo…..

KELLEE PATTERSON…MAIDEN VOYAGE, great vocal take on herbie tune, on the black jazz label.
AHMAD JAMAL…THE AWAKENING, thanks mpd for posting some ahmad.
MILT JACKSON…BAGS NEW GROOVE, start of a “cool few” from the 50’s.
CHET BAKER/ART PEPPER…FOR MILES AND MILES, “man walking on eggshells tastic”.

CHARLES EARLAND…LEAVING THIS PLANET, this should have been included in my moonmix. For Pete D.
MILT JACKSON/FREDDIE HUBBARD…PEOPLE MAKE THE WORLD GO ROUND, with billy cobham on drums, who I am off to see soon. I had olinga and memphis (facebook page) with me, but could I find them?

ETTA JAMES…I GOT YOU BABE, only just got this amazing seven, and it really complemented AC’s three cover versions.
WILLIE MITCHELL…SECRET HOME, it’s such a shame that someone has to pass away for you to dig out their tunes, but this one has special significance for me. I so loved this tune that when I started on this dj lark back in 1965, this was my first theme tune.
RAY BARETTO…ACID, the latin /afrocuban starts to kick in.

THE BONZO DOG DOO DA BAND…THE INTRO AND THE OUTRO, what an amazing one to start with, with lots of enquiries.
PLAID…SCOOPS, never forget the 90’s produced some unique sounds.
JAMES BROWN…..NO TITLES, loverly jb organ instrumental, followed by vocal.
KING CURTIS…WHOLE LOTTA LOVE, silly me I hardly ever play this, my mistake it’s bonkers!

FELA KUTI…GIMME SHIT I GIVE YOU SHIT, spot on!, I meant to play much more of THE man (cover artist on waxpoetics), so next month!

JEWS FOR JESUS…GREAT AND WONDERFUL, this did not clear it either, in fact we are getting quite good at hebrew dancing to this one.
ROSETTA ROSARIO…QUEER THINGS, 1959 gay anthem can you believe!, and that’s enough…get him off, booo…..
BUGS BUNNY..THAT’S ALL FOLKS TO FINISH, with the jacksons “never can say goodbye” on the fade.
The trip at the afroba is a “introandtheoutro”production (I’m on the outro), 2010.
IT BEGAN IN AFRICA-SPEECH SAMPLE
NIGHTMARES ON WAX…LES NUITS, my “nice”downbeat intro tune.
ART PEPPER…SURF RIDE, with THE sleeve.
MIKE WESTBROOK…ORIGINAL PETER, only one of two britjazzers of the night, shame.
WYNTON KELLY/WES MONTGOMERY…NO BLUES, with miles sidesmen, from smokin’ at the half note, live.
ART BLAKEY…LITTLE HUGHIE, I put a little review up on facebook after this band featured on jazz 625 recently.
JACK McDUFF/JOE DUKES…SOULFUL DRUMS, joe is my man on skins.
LONDON JAZZ 4…THINGS WE SAID TODAY, great tune but the only really good one on the lp.
DR. DRE…STILL D.R.E-INSTRUMENTAL, ending the jazzy first section.

CHICAGO..I’M A MAN, just love ‘em during their early jazzier period.
ROOTS MANUVA…TOO COLD, again another not on my radar.
LALO SCHIFRIN…DIRTY HARRY, what a great dirty choice.

PRIMAL SCREAM…HIGHER THAN THE SUN, great 90’s “indie’ tune.
DION ..PURPLE HAZE, hey we’re in heaven here with another cover and on seven.

GENE HARRIS…LOSALAMITOSLATINFUNKLOVESONG, after typing that, no comment!
NWA…WONDERWALL-REMIX, gawd knows where I got this 1995 remix by dre. of oasis from, but boy it’s on the playlist now for the future!
DIZZY GILLESPIE…MANTECA, 1940’s classic from the second modern jazz record I bought back in 1961.
CANDIDO…1,000 FINGER MAN, still with us and featured in the LATIN programme, bongotastic.
SKATALITES…GUNS OF NAVARONNE, for our birthday “boy”
CARLOS MALCOLM…BONANZA SKA, and another.
AUGUSTO PABLO…KING TUBBY MEETS THE ROCKERS UPTOWN, dub at its finest.
GENERAL SAINT AND CLINT EASTWOOD…ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST, how much longer for me!
JURASSIC 5..CONCRETE SCHOOL YARD, hip-hops been a bit neglected tonight as I hand over to AC……

MACHITO…TIN TIN DEO, jazz classic gets mambo’ed.

NWA...EXPRESS YOURSELF, not very well mixed into WONDERWALL, same beats used by dre for both.
FATBACK BAND…KING TIM 3rd., very early hip hopper.
FELA KUTI…GIMME SHIT I GIVE YOU SHIT, spot on!, I meant to play much more of THE man (cover artist on waxpoetics), so next month!

LETTA M’BULU…WHAT IS WRONG WITH GROOVING?, another waxpoetics inspired artist, more of her next month.
NEIL SEDAKA…THE IMMIGRANT, this sessions odd one, but off the back of another great BBC4 documentary.

Well for a post Christmas session we were not expecting a massive turnout but we were all pleasantly surprised by the attendance, so thank you to those that did spend the night with us. The sad bit was the obituaries since the last session, Willie Mitchell, Lyn Tait, Yabby U, Mike Evans of the Action, who all had some tunes played in memorium.
On the positive side, it’s now 50 years since the birth of the Bluebeat label, so a few from that year got dropped together with the Skaometer (thanks pete for the loan of it!) registering over 50% of the tunes played were of that genre, up from 25% during the last four sessions. A little more jazz on the Jassometer also registered! , and I think over 90% of the tunes were written down.
Keith had recently returned from Jamaica, with Bob Marley’s sevens bag!, Dan played yet more stuff on labels I had never heard of!, and Smiler with his new years resolution to see his big book of mod published this year, after the success of the Fleurs .
Thanks also to those who thanked me, especially Keith G. for the audio of the Fleurs gig,, only a select few received a copy and it’s nice to know it was worth the effort, and to our much travelled friends from Swindon, who got a free cd for the effort. The next few months bring with them guest dj’s to keep this old boy especially on his toes, so see you on FEBRUARY 18 th,

TRIP 19/12/2009
The Trip at the afroba with vintage vinyl --Session 57--19/12/2009,
Playlist and Jim’s Ramblings. More at www.jimz.biz
I have often mentioned before that this night is a little like Deal or No Deal, ie. there is a format of sorts, but each show is different, and again session 57 was just that. For the Saturday nearest to Christmas not to play a single Xmas tune was quite some feat, but as I am doing another evening on Christmas Eve., then I am sure the opposite will apply and you will get an excess of Xmassy stuff then. The “plot” for this one however was to record another cd’s worth of material to add to the six new ones I hope to have for you at the January session. The theme following the articles in the new issue of WAXPOETICS, was to record a Blaxploitation films one, and I did just that during the first hour and a quarter. However about three hours into the evening my minidisk player turned itself off spookily and I thought that I may have lost the recording, but someone was looking after me and the recording was preserved thankfully. With respect to WAXPOETICS the other theme this issue is Library music and I hope on Thursday to record a cd’s worth of that as well to make up to 8 the new batch of cd’s to be made available at the January session.
The evening generally was very up and down with the bar filled one moment and then going quiet and then getting busy again, and request wise it was hip hop and soul generally in demand so that’s what we did, finishing slightly earlier without me having to pack all the equipment away which was pure heaven. Andrew was down to guest but could not make it and sent a lovely mix cd. for me to dish out as competition prizes, with at least five being won. Don’t forget this session gets played back at the afroba during January. So onward and upward to this thursday then an afro break until the January 2010 session on the 31st,

TRIP 28/11/2009
the trip at the afroba, SESSION 56, with vintage vinyl-28/11/09, PLAYLIST and Jims RAMBLINGS.
Hey, after last months quiet session this one got us back up there again, with a one stage the afroba almost rammed, to its rafters. Two points to make for anyone wishing to take the dj route. The first is, and this is a constant topic amongst those of us that have been playing out for a while, the tunes. Next to a decent sound system, tunes are the only other pre-requisite, and the fact that when dj’img you must determine if you are there to educate or entertain, but you must communicate by either method. I honestly think that the plot for the trip is to try to do both, but uppermost you must entertain. It’s no good playing endless terrific music if the customers have no idea what the tunes are, and if you do you must mix in some music they know. You must also sum up the audience to see if they are listening. I have found over the years, just by looking at people, to make an attempt to ascertain what they would like to hear. At this session it was obvious early on that some ”female orientated music” would be required for one group, and I struggled to find anything too modern to cope with that. Ok this is a vintage evening, but it’s nice to be able to keep everybody happy!
The other weird thing is intuition!I started with a French tune, not knowing then that a little later a lovely French visitor, would ask me to play some more tunes from his country. So basically if you are out there with an audience don’t hit them with a bedroom/radio dj set, unless the customers are very clearly attending for an evening like that and expect to be “educated”. Now the other point. Equipment. At another session recently one of my turntables slowed down to a stop. I banged it a few times and it got me through the evening. I checked it at home and it still worked ok., but and this is a sign of very old age, I took a spare deck with me just in case! So an hour or so in this session the same one started to play up again. Quick as I could I switched to the other deck, and turntabled “Panic” by the Smiths on the dodgy one just to try it again after thumping it a few times! Sure enough it was panic as it did not correct itself (all this is evident on the playback mini disc, with the odd few gaps/slowdowns), and so I had to cable in the spare one to get us through the evening, which it did, bless it. I always take with me a spare amp., but fortunately this is the first time an extra turntable was with me, as I often joke it’s possible to get by with one turntable providing you can manage to talk in between switching the discs over, but I would not commend it.
The planned bits like lots of new tunes/the ”obituary” section, plus only one that gilles played recently did get on. The rest like the french connection, afroba faves and the mobile disco-with lots of dancing, well away from the decks, towards the end was the “improvised” bit.
Please note that during December you get to hear an extra session. The “normal”, if that’s the right word, session is on DECEMBER 19th, which will be an up for it session but without too much Xmassy stuff, with Andrew guesting. Then on CHRISTMAS EVE, DECEMBER 24th, you get the more mellow christmas pies, jingle bell jazz, Xmas tunes, slightly more laid back session to ease you into Christmas day, bcnu-hopefully/Jimbo jambo jazzbo.

Well another fabbo sesh, not quite as full as usual but several new faces and a pretty good vibe. Smiler was fresh from the Fleurs book launch/event of the year at the 100 Club a week earlier and had slipped in a dj’ing trip to Spain in between. Dan was also on hand with his dj’ing stint at the 100 Club to add to his cv, and Keith made the session this month with his jazzy moments, which of course didn’t get written down! Also Nick joined us for a set having returned to the wheels of steel after 20 years. Also in the place was the man himself Mr. Keith Guster fresh from drumming up a storm at the Fleurs reunion. The Fleurs evening is pretty well covered on YOU TUBE, with Al MacKenzie, Chris Farlowe and Sharon Tandy currently showing. I managed to get a few tunes onto audio on the night and played back two during my “live” Fleurs and Connections set, which sounds pretty good, for me anyway !, and it might be possible to press it up as a freebie cd. Damian could not make the evening but he bust several guts to get the 100 Club evening organised, which means I must get him a new gut for Xmas. Our next sesh. is our annual Xmas knees and everything else up on DECEMBER 17th. I started this evening half an hour earlier than normal and because we had some after work customers in kept the tunes to slightly more 60’s top 40.

TRIP 31/10/2009
the TRIP AT THE AFROBA, READING WITH VINTAGE VINYL-SESSION 55-THE LAST SAT. EACH MONTH-PLAYLIST FOR 31st OCTOBER 2009 AND JIMS RAMBLINGS. MORE AT HYPERLINK "http://www.jimz.biz" www.jimz.biz
The trip session 55, 323 minutes and 22 seconds of some old bloke playing gramophone records. I feel like that’s the only comment I should make after the first session for ages that didn’t quite produce the afro vibe due to the bar only being about half full. However those of you that did come were exposed to much of the same set that I would have played anyway, and the playback sounds pretty much ok, so lets hope that when it gets played back at the afroba, more ears get to hear it! It seems like the first time for ages that with Halloween falling on a Saturday, everybody wanted to dress up and whiz around town rather than stay in one spot. Those that did attend were “treated”, or tricked into free poundshop horror sweeties that were “natural and artificial”! Lets hope the nhs can cope with the aftermath! I also put up a few classic original horror posters to add to the atmosphere. Although quite a few requests came in it was not as many as usual and I managed to get most of the “planned” tunes on. These included a few Gilles had played recently/Wah Wah Watson in the new issue of Waxpoetics/ Ronnie Scotts jazz club 50 th anniversary/ Several tunes on jonny trunks label due to his visit to reading the night before/ Lots of Halloween samples/horror tunes with a “God” one at the end to “balance” the session and spare me going to confession!. I did miss playing the new Waxpoetics single , the Fleur De Lys tunes and tracks from trunks first release back in 1995, which I will get on next month on NOVEMBER 28th, bcnu or not! Count Jimula (dj zero not dj hero).

I often use a speech sample from a Flintstones lp at my other sessions which says” You can’t go back in time, today is today and yesterday is gone forever, you can’t turn back the clock”. Well I beg to differ. Having been there for most of this music/atmosphere the first time around, all I have to do is shut my eyes and I am back there
( There are one or two people however who wish I had stayed there! ) The Blagrave are also very happy with the evening as we continue to pull in slightly more business, due to our great regulars and newbies, than the Goths.
This session was another landmark one as Smiler had with him promo copies of RARE MOD VOL.2, all unreleased tracks, that Damian and himself have compiled for Acid Jazz, together with a copy of the Fleurs 4 track ep which complements the book on the band the geezers will see published in November ( the rumours surrounding the guestlist for the 100 Club launch abound, but its safe to say that as an added bonus at least 2 60’s club icons will also give their vocal chords an outing backed by the Small Fakers). Keith could not make the session and Smiler got away with dropping Lulu, one I would never have contemplated, until I heard it blasting out, superbo!. This gave me the opportunity, but I was going to play them anyway!, to drop The Doc Thomas Group and Mott the Hoople, for personal reasons. Dan also dropped the superb Manish Boys for I think the first time. So the next time I type up one of these, after the session on NOVEMBER 19th, the 100 Club Fleurs gig will have happened and will get fully reported ( Also see the current RECORD COLLECTOR for a great article on the book and the band). TRIP 27/09/2009
The trip at the afroba, with vintage vinyl, Session 54, 27/9/09, Playlist and Ramblings with Jim.
I honestly do not think I will ever get tired of this night, and lets hope its runs forever-if only!
The ability to play what I please and that which seems to please the great crowd we get in is a great joy. It also fascinates me that although we get our regulars, and bless them, where would I be without them, we also get groups of new faces. At this session these newbies seemed to be on top form as most of the prizes went their way. The “plot” for this one I wrote down and intended to cover the following-Autumn tunes/Rashied Ali/Beatles or cover versions/The various reunions coming up-Lulu and Chaka, Mott the Hoople, Cliff and the Shads, The Nolans!(I managed to “forget” the last two)/The Dells with their member John Carter recently passing. I also wanted to pay respects to a very dear friend of mine who passed away recently. For once I managed to get most of this in, (although the tribute to Ronnie Scotts jazz club reaching 50 was missed), deal with requests, and finished the evening showing some of the afroba ladies how easy it is to bung records on. So another one bites the dust, with our Halloween session in October falling on the very night, the 31st, so come spooked up, and don’t forget this entire recorded session, music only without my chat, gets played back during October at the afroba, the only place to trip out to in reading. More playlists/ details at www.jimz .biz---bcnu hopefully-Jim.
