Well here we are, a two an a half hour mix of 54 tunes recorded at the afroba, and all played off original sevens, to promote the REGGAE STEADY GO vintage vinyl sessions on 9th/23rd JULY 2011. This mix covers the years 1959 to 1969, and it is hoped to produce a second one covering the years 1970 to date, eventually.
The mix is roughly, especially the first half, in date order, and some of the pre 1963 tunes, pre Busters Madness, would not normally have got through quality control, certainly on headphones! However it was a pretty random mix, pulling them out straight from the crates, and I wanted the spirit and the timeline to come through rather than the “audio”.

The trip at the afroba SESSION 75, with vintage vinyl-25th June 2011, PLAYLIST.
Right lets get the plugs out of the way first. This session, now in year 8, is always on the last Saturday. Tracks and Grooves, one year young, with the Mighty AC is always on the last Thursday. Both are vintage vinyl nights, and the music covers the 1940’s almost to date!. Mostly it is club music, jazz, black dance music, lounge! but often wanders off into indie, pop, and rock depending on the mood and the crowd. Also this evening is recorded and is played back during the month following. As a result of this some downloads are available on the AFOBA Facebook page which you are very welcome to join. Plus as part of the Outsideinside festival two extra sessions are here during JULY on the 9th and the 23 rd. Ok back to the session, somewhat busier than last month, but still needing a few more attendees to get it back to how it used to be in the old days! Gil Scott Heron was featured again, as were some Glastonbury artists, and I managed to avoid the Wombles. Plus I had completely forgotten it was the second anniversary of Michael Jacksons death, so when I was reminded a few tunes went on. Nice to have Ralph and his friends in the house and Jason and Helen from Hampshire who came a distance and stayed over in Reading as a result. I had been playing out the night before at the Town Hall as part of the 60’s exhibition, so was a little jaded, but because the bar was not packed I was able to keep the evening fairly cool with not too much “ up “ stuff.
So on with the playlist, which if you are reading this before the Doubledot bash at South street on JULY 2nd. includes a few tunes on this playlist that get a replay there as the Mighty and myself are representing the afroba in the main room between acts.

Well another busy sesh, with Smiler, Dan, Keith and Jim back on the steels of wheel.
A bit of a change to the layout however as we have now lost the back “club” room, and are situated in the front bar. This means we have lost a little of the club ambience, but we think with a little more “tweaking” we can get some of it to return in future. Talking of that the next session on JUNE 16 th. is our 8 th. Birthday, so onward and upward.
Don paid us a visit again selling copies of the second volume of his book, and he will be appearing at the Museum/Town Hall on JUNE 24th., reading segments from the first volume. That will be followed by another session (of a 60’s disco!!!) in the 3’B’s, next to the museum. The one we undertook in May after Dorothy Shermans talk was quite well attended, and the Museum apparently has broken all attendance records!

THE TRIP AT THE AFROBA WITH VINTAGE VINYL-THE LAST SATURDAY EACH MONTH-PLAYLIST FOR SESSION 74 ON 28th MAY 2011.

Well they say there is a first time for anything, and at this session I morphed into a bedroom dj., a genre I have never been happy with. Basically either due to the football/the bank holiday/me !, the session was very poorly attended. There is little better than the buzz of jockeying discs/dealing with requests to suit the audience in a busy environment, but in this case neither applied as I may as well have been at home! This did not stop me however from getting on with it (I have seen 8 piece bands in the past still doing their normal superb show, even though hardly anyone was there). The evening therefore was very well mixed and mostly mellow, with no chance of building to any “highs”. However the recording is still with us, and apart from my complete lack of chat-a good thing !- sounds superb. It even gave me the opportunity to try a classic house mix, which was not quite perfect, but when I get it right at a future session one will be released as a download. In this respect the JAZZ ON A SUMMERS DAY mix that I undertook two nights earlier at TRACKS and GROOVES AT THE AFROBA came out ok and will be released as a download. Keep an eye on the afroba page on facebook for it or turn up for the next session for details. Do not be put off by the jazz word! It is not a four letter word!
The original intention for the night was to feature Curtis Mayfield, but the sudden death the day before of GIL SCOTT HERON, meant a change of plan, even though I had featured him at the February session.
So on with the playlist. The next session is on SATURDAY 24th JUNE with TRACKS AND GROOVES the Thursday following JUNE 30th. Also stick a note in your diary! for two specials in JULY on the 9th. and the 23 rd., as REGGAE STEADY GO comes to the afroba as part of the Outsidein Festival.

An interesting session this one, it being the third on consecutive nights at the afroba, with a fairly full house. Two nights earlier I joined the MIGHTY AC for his regular last Thursday session TRACKS and GROOVES, and the night before we ran with the NOT THE ROYAL WEDDING DISCO! The Mighty returned to guest at this session as I had to attend another function, and he played some great stuff during his first two and a half hour set and the final half hour. I started the evening and played between 10.00 to11.30.

Well acker my bilks dan and scroobious. Well even though I say it myself a pretty good evening, with THE most interest in the tunes and me moving even further away from my tuesday night proper jazz listening evening. Now its groovin’ and fingerpoppin night. But what the heck a lot of jazz spirit is still there and who knows post the smoking ban I might try a weekday again as well as these Fridays to see if the spirit and the audience is still there. I had planned lots of tunes plucked from the new WAXPOETICS-marked WP- and managed a few, but cut back on funk britania tunes and played a lot of tunes for the first time with Stan Tracey’s Milk Wood being the featured lp., plus a little Compost label segment which was not planned but which just found their way onto the turntables. Drums seemed to feature more than ever and it is in the skins that most tunes do it for me. Speaking of which Dan from the Scroobious team was in the house and I wish them all the best with their superb “thou shalt not” single. Also beware at my next session of the trip on Saturday April 28th. I intend to play a lot of tunes by the artists namechecked in the single. Also I intend to produce my own single called “Thou shalt not cast record sleeves to one side unless the vinyl is removed”. So another one dusts the bite, now if only I could stop my mike cord getting tangled with the stylus arm I think I could make a go of this dj lark……BCNU DJ JD (aka jazzy jim)

Although we are back next month on the 21st APRIL, without Smiler but with Ian in for him, you have an extra special session with Martin playing again on the afternoon of the Exhibition opening at the 3 B’s, next to Reading Museum on SATURDAY 9th APRIL. Be there or be very square.
