TRIP 17/12/2010

The trip at the afroba with vintage vinyl session 69-17/12/2010. PLAYLIST and JIMS RAMBLINGS. MORE AT www.jimz.biz and JIM B. DONOVAN and AFROBA GROUP ON FACEBOOK…..
Well we ran with the session a couple of weeks early and on a Friday so the a bar was not as rammed as usual, but still full enough for a nice pre xmas vibe, where I chose not to drop too much xmassy stuff due to tracks and grooves at the afroba happening on the following thursday, and the fact that the session will get played back during January. Also I was not feeling 100% and closed down the session an hour earlier than usual. Of course the moment I mentioned this the bar filled up but I’m afraid I stopped anyway. The next session is on SATURDAY 29th JANUARY, where I drop lots of the top tunes I played during 2010, plus two nights earlier TRACKS and GROOVES on THURSDAY 27th, starts the new year with a wallop! Have a great chrissy and look forward to seeing you in eleven….

TRIP 27/11/2010

The TRIP at the afroba with vintage vinyl, Session 68-27th. November 2010, playlist and Jim’s ramblings. More at www.jimz.biz and Jim B. Donovan and Afroba Group on Facebook.
Standing room only and the bar nearly drunk dry!, plus me playing a few tunes just about sums up another very busy evening. However a quiet start where I got to drop some “winter” tunes, then a nice middle section “build”, then right “up” to end where we had to say goodbye at midnight. Kirsten and Jess really worked their socks off-if they were wearing any !-behind the bar, and so nice to see Liam and his mates in celebrating a birthday. The Mighty AC also was in the house fresh from his brilliant session Tracks and Grooves at the afroba, two nights earlier. His next session is on December 23 rd, so skip the late Christmas shopping and drop in to drop out!
The next session of the TRIP is on FRIDAY 17th DECEMBER, our annual Xmas special. There is the possibility that we may run with a New Years Eve session, so keep an eye on the posters in the afroba, or either join the facebook group, or attend the next session to keep in touch. Also don’t forget the recorded session 68 gets played back, all five and a half hours of it at the afroba during the week.

Well we moved the night one evening forward to coincide with the afroba Halloween fancy dress party, and boy was it a busy one, especially after 9.00, when the fancy dressers turned up en masse, check the facebook photos! The plot for me was to get as much halloweeny type music in as possible as well as pay respects to Mr. Scruff for his great gig in reading recently. When he popped into the shop I presented him with a set of 8 afroba cd’s, so watch out in future for afroba type music turning up in his sets. The afroba staff spent ages decorating the place, which together with some of my horror posters and Elvira in the window really caught the atmosphere. I also laid on some Horror-and a few others!, SUPER 8 films, which we had given a shot at, at the previous nights new session TRACKS and GROOVES, which you must get down to on the last Thursday. Towards the end we got into a little reggae/ska music to pave the way for Neville Staples of the Specials gig on Halloween itself, at which I drop yet more tunes, and show more films! TRIP 25/09/2010

THE TRIP AT THE AFROBA-NORMALLY ON THE LAST SATURDAY- WITH VINTAGE VINYL SESSION 66---25/9/2010. PLAYLIST and JIMS RAMBLINGS. MORE AT www.jimz.biz and FACEBOOK-JIM B. DONOVAN or AFROBA GROUP.

Variety is supposed to be the spice of life, and after last months ”focussed” jazz evening and next months Halloween special, I suppose you could say session 66 was pretty varied. I always start the evening with some plans in mind, but usually after a few requests we just seem to “go random”. Anyway that’s what the customers seem to want so who am I to deny them. It helps that I had 15 LP cases and 4 sevens boxes with me, which gives me the freedom to wander about! I started very focussed even keeping the chat down to a minimum, only checking the tunes about an hour and a half in and then going another hour an a half doing the same. After that when it got busy I did start to rabbit more, and of course I notice it more now as the recording picks up my chat, which it didn’t on the old mixer. Now I am leaving the spare equipment in situ you now have another “trip type” evening to get down to. The Mighty AC with his Tracks and Grooves is on the last Thursday. Also the new afroba FACEBOOK and THE TRIP pages are up and running so join the groups to be kept in touch with happenings. Next month we do our annual spooky session, a night earlier than usual so get witched-up, on FRIDAY OCTOBER 29th!-BCNU…Jim.

TRIP 28/08/2010

the Trip session 65 “no room for squares”-jazzorizit- special with vintage vinyl on 28th August 2010, Playlist and Ramblings. More at HYPERLINK "http://www.jimz.biz" www.jimz.biz, and Jim B Donovan on facebook…..
Well if you had said to me ten years ago, that I would still be playing out on a Saturday night at a packed bar in the middle of Reading, and playing “jazz” at that, I would have thought it was all a dream. However I think it happened in reality last night. The “plot” was to do a “Sod the Reading Festival “, special and revive my old “jazzorizit” night “No Room For Squares”. Let’s hope after last night that we can get the night back, as I am now able to leave my equipment in situ., and this has already lead to another night starting on the last thursday “Tracks and Grooves”, with the Mighty AC throwing the tunes on. However all good things have a downside. This one is that the equipment I am using is my spare kit, and is not quite, in my view, in spite of masses of testing, up to my normal rig. It seemed to get us through ok however , but I had a glitch with one turntable-that you would hardly notice- but the recording which I could not have set up right only recorded one channel, and that in mono. Plus every other tune has low volume on the playback. It might take some time therefore to copy it for the afroba to play back, and even may not copy well at all, so a month might go missing!
So nice to see a lot of regular faces, and new ones, especially the guy, who said he “had never been to a night like it”. I just hope that was a compliment! Plus lots of interest in the tunes and competitions. Also nice to see Nigel and his wife, who are involved with “jazz in reading”, it could lead to some “live” jazz at the afroba. Tim ibetya popped in towards the end, and photographed nicely for my facebook page. We also had some genuine reading festival mud in the place to add to the atmosphere!!! The night was dedicated to the late Abbey Lincoln, and the next session is back to “normal” on September 25th, with “Tracks and Grooves” the following thursday Sept 30th. Be there or be somewhere else!

Well it seems like for the last seven years we have just been building up to take this night into orbit, and we are finally up there, with an evening that seemed to hit all the right high notes. Great venue, Great Tunes, Great Guests, Great Crowd. My only problem was I missed most of the early part of the evening due to jazzboitis, but I got back to Rude at 9.45, and the place was rockin’ or is that moddin’. However for the last few days, the recording I have of the evening has been played over and over non stop, and the vibe is still there on the minidisk. The DRC crew, Lee, Bruce, Mike from Wycombe guested , and did they make a great job of it?, I want more!. Dan returned to play from his hols., Smiler from his chat with Martha Reeves, and I dished out a load of free Toots and the Maytals cd’s. We are back to “normal”, next month but are already working on a super duper Christmas special-Rickidy Tickedy, Bcnu-Jim.

TRIP 31/07/2010

THE TRIP AT THE AFROBA WITH VINTAGE VINYL PLAYLIST FOR SESSION 64 -31st JULY 2010, WITH JIM. MORE PLAYLISTS AT HYPERLINK "http://www.jimz.biz" www.jimz.biz, and JIM B DONOVAN on Facebook.
Well another “interesting” session. The a-bar did not fill to capacity, but it remained nicely full for the most part of the latter part of the evening, and the vibe, the requests and the general chatting was great. I was a little more “apprehensive” than usual, due to an aspect that in reality is very positive. I am now being allowed to leave my spare equipment in situ, to spare me hours having to bring it in and out, which means initially that coming on August 26th., is another night called TRACKS and GROOVES, which the Mighty AC and myself are undertaking to compliment the trip. However the spare equipment is not quite up to my usual clobber, but basically it got me through the night, with a few problems like one styus going funny on me and odd bits of feedback where the levels were not quite right. Plus with a different mixer I am not able to record the evening without it picking up my chatting on the mike, so in future playback of the recording during the week will include moi chatting as well as the music, sorry!
The next session our annual “Sod the Reading Festival” night on AUGUST 28th., sees the return for “one night only” of my old afroba evening “NO ROOM FOR SQUARES”, which means that the night will be more jazz orientated than usual. Do not let this put you off, my interpretation of “jass” is very broad, as you can tell from some of the old playlists on my website. Also I have hooked up with the “Jazz in Reading“ organisers and they are including the night on their mailing lists, so who knows what the turnout will be like. If you only like pure trip type music-if there is such a thing- then at least come along to our new night two night earlier, but be bold and try them both!
The evening was dedicated to Harry Beckett and Rammell Zee, both very different musicians but both iconic in their own fields, they will be sadly missed. BCNU-Jim.
HARRY BECKETT…METROPOLIS PART 9, started with a short tribute to one of our great trumpet players who passed away recently.

DELPHONICS…DIDN’T I BLOW YOUR MIND THIS TIME, requested and used in jackie brown.
NICK DRAKE…BRYTER LATER, was asked for donovan but had none with me, so go for this, another funky folkie. I left the mike open by mistake quite a lot and this one has some “nice” crowd background sound.

BECK…DEVILS HAIRCUT, mucho afro played tune.

RUDE 15/07/2010

CLUB RUDE -WITH VINTAGE VINYL- NEW VENUE PLAYLIST 15th JULY 2010. NOW AT THE QUEENS ARMS, GREAT KNOLLYS STREET, READING, RG1 7HH, THIRD THURSDAY EACH MONTH. MORE PLAYLISTS at www.jimz.biz and on FACEBOOK-CLUB RUDE or PAUL ANDERSON or JIM B DONOVAN and the TROJAN RECORDS WEBSITE. NEXT SESSION ON 19th AUGUST 2010.
At long last our own room, with most of the Equipment/Lighting in situ, our own Bar, plenty of Scooter/Car Parking, Dancefloor and the look and feel of the old Ricky Tick Club. Nick, Martin, Mike and Pete joined Smiler and myself on the steels of wheel and the night just “flew by”, with free BIRDS “live”cd’s being given out to those who came early, with the attendance certainly seeming to be up as well. The only problem with the playlist is it’s not exactly in the proper running order. A combination of the six of us writing the tunes down, spilling booze on the sheets, and the final indignity of my mini-disc recording not recording caused this, the nights only problem.
So onward and upward to the next sesh. when Dan and Keith return and hopefully a free Toots and the Maytals “live” cd for the first 30 through the door-

TRIP 26/06/2010

THE TRIP SESSION 63, with vintage vinyl at the afroba, the last Saturday each month---26th JUNE 2010--- Playlist and Ramblings. More at www.jimz.biz and Jim B Donovan on Facebook (photos and all!) THE NEXT SESSION IS ON JULY 31st.
Well and this is beginning to become a clichĂ©, another night that exceeded my expectations. My problem is however I do not get out enough, so I have no idea whether nights like this are commonplace, in Reading anyway. From the comments I received on the night it does not seem so, with so many new faces saying how they were enjoying the selection and that they would be back. The Mighty AC (the hardest working man in show business?) joined me, having also played out at Mondo Fuzz (another highly rated night) at the Global the night before, and dropped a load of goodies. I tried for a bit of an “African/ Glastonbury” theme for obvious reasons, with a few tributes to those recently passed.
So onward and upward with the next session back on JULY 31 st. and news then of the possibility of another “trip influenced” new night starting on AUGUST 26th….Yours/DJ Wasting Away (Jimbo)……………………………………

Well after seven years this session really brought together all its various musical strands, with a great crowd in and a vibe, that needs to be bottled! Some of us were “fresh” from the Toots gig the night before, with Smiler having obtained an interview with the man. The first 50 through the door received a superb free cd compiled by our guest dj’s who are playing next month. We hope to continue the free cd’s and next month a very special free one which again we think will “fly out”, and I’m already working on another for the month after. Stewart from the Oxford Roadrunners did us proud with a guest dj set, and we welcomed the “well travelled” from Wales, Somerset, and Wiltshire, a big thank you for taking the time and the trouble. Plus visiting us for the first time the iconic Martin Fuggles, the 60’s Windsor Ricky Tick dj., let’s hope it’s the first of many. TRIP 29/05/2010

The trip session 62, with vintage vinyl at the afroba, the last Saturday each month- 29 th. May 2010, Playlist and Ramblings. More at www.jimz.biz and Jim B Donovan on Facebook (Photos and all!!)
Well little did I know when I started the evening at 6.30, that the first two tunes would just about sum the night up. “It’s going to be a fine night tonight” and “Something Else”. In a nutshell it was a hectic one, with a lot of my “planned” tunes, like Sun Ra , not getting on , due to a switch to a long party disco segment, when it gradually dawned on me I was doing my own birthday disco. Thanks to the crew therefore for the cake, the dressing up, the vibe, and to the Mighty AC, for stepping up to the decks to give the old boy a break. During the break I chatted to so many customers who seemed to like what was happening. All I could say was thank you, and come again, at least whilst I still have the enthusiasm! Like all good things that come out of improvisation, the armwrestling contests gave the evening an added charm, as did the dancing. I was so relaxed!, that I let the dancing happen close to the decks without my usual shout to keep well away to avoid record skipz. So the session gets played back during the evenings during June and the session is back on JUNE 26th., with the Mighty AC guesting/

Another pretty good session that was quiet to begin with, got really busy, and then just tailed off quietly, with the most amount of Scooters ever, thanks to the Oxford crew, and Joe from the Trojan forum website visiting for the first time. Only problems were traffic wardens, bowler hats “falling” on the decks, and sometimes more geezers behind the decks than in front of of it. This I am afraid lead to about half the tunes not being written down, and this old jazz duffer having to spend ages listening to the playback to add a few more. All the “normal geezers played, Smiler, dropping especially both sides of Chris Farlowes magnificent new single, Dan, Keith and myself with Mick joining us for a few boss tunes. The next session on JUNE 17th, is our 7th., birthday special with free cd’s for the first 50 through the door, bcnu-No. 64. (Jim)

the TRIP AT THE AFROBA, READING with vintage vinyl, SESSION 61, --24th APRIL 2010-- PLAYLIST AND JIMS RAMBLINGS. MORE AT www.jimz.biz and Jim B Donovan on facebook.
Well you really did put me through it at this session. From 6.30 to 9.30 it was like a nice steady cruise at low speed with hardly anybody in. Then from 9.30 to midnight the place just filled to the rafters and I got bombarded with conversations and requests. At my age I really do need to pace myself and I got into a real mess with the tunes, (with another 16 boxes with me!) We also went a bit ‘indy” request wise, no problem with that except I would not normally go down that route unless asked. Also I did a few more competitions with afroba cd’s as prizes. The 8 new ones are now available and will be with me at the next session or in the shop in the meanwhile. The evening obviously paid its respects especially to Guru and during the earlier segment I got on a lot of tunes that have not been played before or for ages. If you missed the earlier segment do not forget it gets played back without my chat as continuous music during the evenings in May.
Next session subtitled “When I’m…”(all will be revealed on the night) is on MAY 29th, and COME EARLY!!, please.

CLUB RUDE IS A “THELADIESSTAYEDINFORTHEMASSDEBATE” PRODUCTION, 2010

TRIP 03/04/2010

the trip at the afroba, with vintage vinyl-SESSION 60, 3/4/2010, Playlist and Jims ramblings. More at www.jimz.biz and Jim B Donovan on Facebook.
Well for a session that went from Bill Evans to the Smiths via Vanilla Ice and 4-Hero, this one wandered a long way from what I originally had “planned” to play. The reason mainly was quite a large birthday party crew in that I tried to incorporate into the evening, to the extent that I let birthday boy take over the mike for some very good rapping and let him undertake his own competitions, plus he was no mean dancer. The party was of course surprised that I was playing, as I was a week later than usual, so they got a “party” for free! Don’t forget if you want to book the afroba for your own party with or without me just contact Channie or Chris in Cham Chams downstairs. I suppose on the night the old mobile mentality came to the fore again, but what the heck there’s nothing better than integrating your audience into the evening, rather than adopting a “heads down”, I’ll play the music I want regardless, just like I experienced recently with a “name” dj. The plot I had worked out for the evening was meant to include lots of artists featured in the new Waxpoetics. The wall photo on my facebook page shows a lot of what I had hoped to play, but basically only about half of it got on. So What!-in the words of Miles. I also did a few competitions giving away copies of the new cd’s which are now available. Don’t forget the recording of this session-music only without my chat- gets played back during the week at the afroba. Plus it’s a well known fact that I am crap at mixing, but somewhere during this session (I have not fully played it back yet and can’t remember where it was), there was a seamless mix that caused a few gasps from those that know about such things! Also the session was a week later than usual, which means we are back for session 61 quite soon on Saturday April 24th, returning to the last Saturday format, bcnu –hopefully, Jimbo.

RUDE 18/03/2010

CLUB RUDE at the Blagrave Arms, Reading, with vintage vinyl. Playlist for 18th March 2010, and Jim’s Ramblings. More at jimz.biz and Jim B Donovan on Facebook….
Another session with another excellent guest DJ. Martin Weller took to the decks in skatastic style, and I have done my best for once to try and separate out most of his tunes below, if only for pete’s sake. We had another good turnout which was slightly skewed towards the male of the species, possibly due to Smilers facebook flyer photo. Keith from the Fleurs joined us together with dj dj, and I found the evening due to my old age a little loud, so I had to keep popping outside for a chat. It sounded great out there! Pete and friends all the way from Swindon also joined us, so thanks for making the trip. Smiler had his shop full of goodies set up, and Dan complemented Martins tunes, leaving Smiler and myself to concentrate more on the r and b /jazzy side of things. I just had to drop some Cherry Wainer, and slip into a cravat in respect of her clips on You Tube, and pay respects to Charlie Gillett and Alex Chilton of the Boxtops. The evening was dedicated to Jimmy Cliff, who is only the second Jamaican to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Keith could not make the session but we hope he will be back with us on APRIL 15 th. BCNU, hopefully-Jimbo

TRIP 27/02/2010

the trip at the afroba, Session 59, with vintage vinyl. Playlist and Jims ramblings, on the
27th Feb 2010. More at www.jimz.biz and Facebook-Jim B. Donovan
Hey 8 years, 230 evenings, 10,000 tunes, and all after I had semi-retired from record playing. Owning up time as well. Quite where the music mix or the vibe comes from is still difficult to describe. I have never been one for attending other dj evenings , certainly up to 10 years back, and never really up to then wanted to get involved in discreet specialist music evenings. Too easy playing one style to an audience there just for that! So for ages I went the mobile route, not knowing what crowd I would be up against. I suppose it was only the diminishing of vinyl towards 2000 that took me off that scene. I can’t help it but playing off anything else just ain’t right. Sorry. “Passionate about vinyl and playing out”, was how someone described me at this session, I’m afraid I concur.
So here we are in 2010, I’m 45 years into this scene, and more than ever thinking how long can I keep it up. If it was not for the fact that with the trip I can play as I please, and what I play seems to create an enthusiastic vibe. Human nature would not be what it is without getting a buzz from at the end of a five and a half hour set acknowledging applause, so many many thanks, its much appreciated.
As much “fun” as it is, you do need to concentrate, keep a musical flow going, sort some sort of sequencing, deal with requests, chat with our great regulars. I can usually assess how well an evening went by the state of the records/filing, and at the end of trip 59 they were in a mess! The session also never really “finishes” either. Once the evening is over there is the “lugging”, typing and posting this, copying mini-discs, and now facebook. Once that’s done its straight to ideas for the next session. These normally come to a head about a week before the night when the tunes I want to play get checked out, but often I go right to the wire. The obvious “mistake” with regard to the “wall display/photos” this month is I so wanted to play some Dennis Wilson, due to the great programme about him the night before, but he didn’t get on. Shame on me!
Apologies as well, but the 8 new cd’s were not ready, but they will be available at the next session or in the shop in the meanwhile. Plus so many thanks to Pete and his lady for trekking all the way from Swindon, I hope it was worth the effort, and a million thanks to Pete for doubling my blue note sevens collection to 40. This man has more than 10 times that amount, bless him, and I thought I was a blue note collector, no competition! This sevens thing however means I must devote more time to them especially as I am in my 45th year of playing out. So at each session for the rest of this year at least one hour devoted to 45’s.
So we finally reached tune 1,000, with the old boy running with it as a “pick of the pops countdown”. It’s too late for a radio career for me but sometimes I think what I attempt is a show for radio but “live”.
Most of what I wanted to cover got on, not as much “African”, and more James Last than expected. Thanks to the mighy ac for pushing me in the hansi direction. I would never have gone for this without a push, but boy did it work. The night was dedicated to Johnny Dankworth and Dale Hawkins, bless them both, and blessed by Gil Scott-Heron’s new LP.. Please note the next session is on APRIL 3rd., a week later than usual,
bcnu-Jimbo Jambo Jazzbo..

STONE ROSES…FOOLS GOLD, need a chat to pete so on goes a “longie”

..and then the “hit” of the session, I don’t believe it!!!
JAMES LAST MEGAMIXED BY ME!…bit of a miscue, then INNER CITY BLUES/SILVER MACHINE/TWO TRIBES/ AQUARIUS/AI NO CORRIDA, with mor! later.
BILLY COBHAM…STRATUS, saw him last week at ronnie scotts, the drummer that “inspired” massive attack., into which I easily mixed…
MASSIVE ATTACK…SAFE FROM HARM, the lp version.
GANGSTARR…MOMENT OF TRUTH, one of my all time greats of the hop –hip genre.
…then we moved via brian fayes pop 40 countdown music to tune 9,997, a replay of tune 500…
JOHN COLTRANES…A LOVE SUPREME, “the best jazz record ever”, and when I played this originally at tune 500, I produced a paper justifying my decision.
DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER…AFRO-BLUE, played as tune 1,000 to be an obscure vocal jazzy funky offering with afro in the title, gilles fave and Japanese issue only.
CCS…WHOLE LOTTA LOVE, originally played as tune 2,000, now played as tune 9,999, meant to reflect something british-this was at the height of jazz brittania on bb4 originally-and a cover of a known tune.
FINALLY TUNE 10,000---4-HERO…BLACK GOLD OF THE SUN, much requested and enquired about over the years with the “populist” in me going for the crowd pleasing “modern “version rather than the divine original by rotary connection, oh well that’s show-biz!
