TRIP 24/04/2010

the TRIP AT THE AFROBA, READING with vintage vinyl, SESSION 61, --24th APRIL 2010-- PLAYLIST AND JIMS RAMBLINGS. MORE AT www.jimz.biz and Jim B Donovan on facebook.
Well you really did put me through it at this session. From 6.30 to 9.30 it was like a nice steady cruise at low speed with hardly anybody in. Then from 9.30 to midnight the place just filled to the rafters and I got bombarded with conversations and requests. At my age I really do need to pace myself and I got into a real mess with the tunes, (with another 16 boxes with me!) We also went a bit ‘indy” request wise, no problem with that except I would not normally go down that route unless asked. Also I did a few more competitions with afroba cd’s as prizes. The 8 new ones are now available and will be with me at the next session or in the shop in the meanwhile. The evening obviously paid its respects especially to Guru and during the earlier segment I got on a lot of tunes that have not been played before or for ages. If you missed the earlier segment do not forget it gets played back without my chat as continuous music during the evenings in May.
Next session subtitled “When I’m…”(all will be revealed on the night) is on MAY 29th, and COME EARLY!!, please.

TRIP 03/04/2010

the trip at the afroba, with vintage vinyl-SESSION 60, 3/4/2010, Playlist and Jims ramblings. More at www.jimz.biz and Jim B Donovan on Facebook.
Well for a session that went from Bill Evans to the Smiths via Vanilla Ice and 4-Hero, this one wandered a long way from what I originally had “planned” to play. The reason mainly was quite a large birthday party crew in that I tried to incorporate into the evening, to the extent that I let birthday boy take over the mike for some very good rapping and let him undertake his own competitions, plus he was no mean dancer. The party was of course surprised that I was playing, as I was a week later than usual, so they got a “party” for free! Don’t forget if you want to book the afroba for your own party with or without me just contact Channie or Chris in Cham Chams downstairs. I suppose on the night the old mobile mentality came to the fore again, but what the heck there’s nothing better than integrating your audience into the evening, rather than adopting a “heads down”, I’ll play the music I want regardless, just like I experienced recently with a “name” dj. The plot I had worked out for the evening was meant to include lots of artists featured in the new Waxpoetics. The wall photo on my facebook page shows a lot of what I had hoped to play, but basically only about half of it got on. So What!-in the words of Miles. I also did a few competitions giving away copies of the new cd’s which are now available. Don’t forget the recording of this session-music only without my chat- gets played back during the week at the afroba. Plus it’s a well known fact that I am crap at mixing, but somewhere during this session (I have not fully played it back yet and can’t remember where it was), there was a seamless mix that caused a few gasps from those that know about such things! Also the session was a week later than usual, which means we are back for session 61 quite soon on Saturday April 24th, returning to the last Saturday format, bcnu –hopefully, Jimbo.
