The trip at the afroba, with vintage vinyl, Session 54, 27/9/09, Playlist and Ramblings with Jim.
I honestly do not think I will ever get tired of this night, and lets hope its runs forever-if only!
The ability to play what I please and that which seems to please the great crowd we get in is a great joy. It also fascinates me that although we get our regulars, and bless them, where would I be without them, we also get groups of new faces. At this session these newbies seemed to be on top form as most of the prizes went their way. The “plot” for this one I wrote down and intended to cover the following-Autumn tunes/Rashied Ali/Beatles or cover versions/The various reunions coming up-Lulu and Chaka, Mott the Hoople, Cliff and the Shads, The Nolans!(I managed to “forget” the last two)/The Dells with their member John Carter recently passing. I also wanted to pay respects to a very dear friend of mine who passed away recently. For once I managed to get most of this in, (although the tribute to Ronnie Scotts jazz club reaching 50 was missed), deal with requests, and finished the evening showing some of the afroba ladies how easy it is to bung records on. So another one bites the dust, with our Halloween session in October falling on the very night, the 31st, so come spooked up, and don’t forget this entire recorded session, music only without my chat, gets played back during October at the afroba, the only place to trip out to in reading. More playlists/ details at www.jimz .biz---bcnu hopefully-Jim.

TRIP 29/08/2009
the trip at the afroba, session 53, with vintage vinyl, playlist and ramblings, with jim-29/08/09.
Crazy mixed up or what!, another session that took this evening in yet another direction. I’m beginning to wonder how many different directions there must be left? What is great though is that I convince myself there is a bit of a plot to this night, often in segments there is not and jockeying the discs to suit is a little like improvising. The plot for this one anyway was to play a little less jazz for once, but to attempt to pay homage to Woodstock, with some classic 60’s rock to counter the Reading festival that was in town and was featuring zilch wrinklies. Also to quell the jacko mania that has taken over the decks the last few months to pay respects to Rod Temperton, he of mj composing fame, plus feature, and little did I know that we were going to be swamped by our brazillian friends, brazillian music inspired by the new Waxpoetics. We also overran slightly due to latecomers celebrating a birthday, you really must come earlier!, I’m on the steels of wheel from 6.30 to Midnight. Also big thanks for the applause at the end, but really its only some old bloke bunging records on, who refuses to be labelled a legend-honest. Next session is on SEPTEMBER 26th our annual autumn leaves night. More playlists at www.jimz.biz, bcnu- hopefully/Jim

RUDE 20/08/2009
CLUB RUDE-NOW AT THE BLAGRAVE ARMS, READING, PLAYLIST AND RAMBLINGS, 20th AUGUST 2009. WITH Smiler/Dan/Keith and Jim (who is responsible for this playlist and lots more!)
MORE PLAYLISTS/DETAILS AT www.jimz.biz
Well first up a big thanks to Readings Goths who gave up their regular Thursday evening at THE BLAGRAVE ARMS to let Rude return to the venue in some style, with only a weeks notice! The general vibe seemed to be that the venue was on par with the Coopers-whom we thank very much for letting us play there- and slightly more “intimate”, and with a little more room to shake your rump. The other bonus is that in future we can run on a little later than 11.00 if we wish, so lets see how things pan out. Also for the first time ever virtually all of the tunes were written down, over 90 of them, meaning yet more work for yours truly! I have now played back the mini disc recording about 4 times and it really does sound sweet, especially Keiths early set, and the “trend” towards a little more Atlantic/Stax material, which must be due to Smilers/Damiens ‘fluence with regard to the recently completed Fleurs book. We are also looking towards setting up another night Club Nitty Gritty at the same venue, with generally the same feel, so watch this space.

TRIP 25/07/2009
The trip@the afroba, with vintage vinyl, Session 52, 25/07/09, PLAYLIST and Ramblings with Jim.
Well after a whole month at my other gigs of playing nothing but endless mj it was a pleasure to return to the afroba and enjoy a virtual mj free evening, especially as at session 51, he also dominated the evening. Lets let him rest in peace now, and we will not pay tribute again until he passes away the next time! So mj may have been the theme last month, but this month we kept it newsworthy again with a “Moon/Space” theme running through the evening, due to the anniversary of the moon landing. Also for the first time I attempted to record some material for a future cd well into the evening, when the place was jumping, rather than early on when I can concentrate more as things are a little quieter. As such I did not want to do a full 75 minute mix, as we needed later mid evening to get some of our faves on, so I kept the “MOON-MIX”, 12 tracks to approx 45 minutes, and I will fill it out with another shorter 30 minute mix when we get it to cd. The evening which as usual got busy between 9.30 to 11.00 ( you really must come earlier and stay later ! ), embraced a lot of new “old” tunes, many requests, and some of our classics. This time there were no “accidents”-see the playlist for session 51-and we only produced one competition winner even though I did three. Thanks also to most of our regular regulars who seem to have the last Saturday firmly in their diaries ( diaries!, what are they ? ). Plus don’t forget the session gets played back during the week at the afroba, without my chat and this playlist on hand. The next session is our annual “Sod the Reading festival” night on AUGUST 29th. Be there or be somewhere else!!
bcnu maybe, Jim. ( MORE PLAYLISTS AT www.jimz.biz )

Welcome to my 208 th. Session here and its a very big thank you to those of you who have attended this evening during the last four years. Six months ago we celebrated our fourth birthday with the playing of TUNE 3,000 and a policy of trying to make these evenings a little "exclusive" and unique for Reading town centre anyway! The last Sat. TRIP session has given me the ability to play across the board, but includes some of the other nights music. The PROGRAM, now in year 6, has exposed me even more to Veris’s/ Andrews’s eclectic tastes, which, when I have the tunes, has bled over into my own nights. Check the PROGRAM-here always on the first Friday- www.myspace.com/veristheprogram.
So again I attempt the impossible and bring this jass music to a Friday evening "up for it" crowd. For the last few sessions I have moved the music to the very fringes of my interpretation of jazz and often beyond. This will not prevent me trying to adhere to some of the original ground rules-see enclosed-if the mood and the attendence seem to warrant it. Also please note tonight I do not have as many tunes with me as normal. This is due to at the moment to having to bring them in as I am am unable to leave them here from the previous session, so tunes you see on last months playlist may not be available. However the music speaks for itself, so let it play and you make up your mind whether it is the word jazz itself that is offputting, 'cause it certainly ain't the sounds coming out of the speakers. You will see from last months playlist however that I wandered a little at this Friday evening going someway beyond the original tuesday evenings jazz roots, and have altered the tag line to include classy disco.
Tonight, I will attempt to play some more jazzy Gilles Peterson tunes, as recently Gilles has been playing a lot of 70’s souljazzdisco on his Radio 1 show, and I have been pinching a few to play here. He has a new mix 3 cd set out now called Gilles Peterson in the House(crap title!), for which my son Miles has produced the sleeve art (www.peepshow.org.uk). The second cd has all the tunes he has been playing recently and tonight I get to play some more of them, off original vinyl. He also last week had a feature which included Carl Craig talking about Detroit jazz, so a little of CC and the jazz tonight.
Now the Waxpoetics connection. THE vinyl mag has just produced an anthology of its early issues and I get to see what I missed in issues 1 and 2, so tonight the likes of Bernard Purdie-again- and Idris Muhammad get some spins, again. Waxpoetics (ISSUE 29 just out) also has its own radio show once a week out of New York on East Village Radio, which you can podcast. I will be attempting to play some of the tunes that they have featured as my own tribute to THE vinyl mag. Unusually on recent shows they have been featuring some tracks that I have only just been dropping. Could it be that my playlists here are getting a little attention elsewhere? Tonight however we celebrate issue 29 with lots of tunes from Herbie Hancock, Lalo Schifrin( Enter the Dragon/Bullitt/Dirty Harry etc.), Sam Rivers, Cedric Brooks and a little hip hop all from the artists featured in the new issue. Herbie and Lalo are both boyhood idols of mine that I have collected for over 45 years so at last they get mucho afroba exposure. Plus tonight more of my summer mixes which are proving popular.( can’t wait for winter! to try more seasonal stuff)
Tonight we have to dedicate the evening to two late greats, Jimmy McGriff and Bo Diddley. Jimmy Mc G. is next to Jimmy Smith THE Jazz Organ player and like the WAXPOETICS RADIO SHOW recently you get tonight to hear him and a lot more plus some other organ greats. His version of the Last Minute on Sue 7” was one of my early purchases back in 1965 and I have kept with him ever since. Much the same could be said of Bo, although more blues/rock than jazz he was a vital geezer to purchase back in the 60’s and influenced so many of todays and yesterdays musicians.
…. Finally I intend to drop a few tunes from the last TRIP session., playlist enclosed, from two weeks ago, especially the best jazz reissue for ages, Herbie Hancocks jewish jazz lp recorded in 1968, a vital purchase You will also see a mention on the playlist enclosed that PLAYBACK sessions have now started, so you may be here during the week and get to hear again or not a session you were at or not!, as the recordings of the evening, without my chat on, are now getting extra airings. Also thanks to Andrew for guesting at the last trip, and watch out for VERIS from the Program guesting at the trip on JULY 26th, the sky is now the limit!
Thanks for reading this. The next NRFS is on AUGUST 8th, with the TRIP back on SATURDAY JULY 26th,, and THE PROGRAM on AUGUST 1st. Bless you all / JIM. ( Remember don’t loose your head, your brains are in it! )
All my sessions at the moment are dedicated to Ambrose Campbell and Jack Fallon both who died the year before last. Jack, Bless him was the guy who on opening a new Discotheque in Hereford in 1965 gave me my first chance to play out in a club environment. I however was very small fry compared to Jacks other achievements. He had had a great career playing bass with some of the British jazz greats like Ronnie Scott, Tubby Hayes and George Shearing. He also got to play with greats like Duke Ellington, Stephane Grappelli, Sarah Vaughan, and Big Bill Broonzy. He set up a variety agency in 1952 which handled the Beatles, Shirley Bassey, The Rolling Stones and most of the major British 60's Club bands. On top of all that he was the "house bassist" for the Lansdowne label in the 60's and played on the superb and ultra rare Ambrose Campbell album a few tracks from which I will play tonight in tribute to them both. To cap it all he also played on the Beatles White album in 1968. Bless you Jack, without you where would I have ended up!
