TRIP 31/07/2010

THE TRIP AT THE AFROBA WITH VINTAGE VINYL PLAYLIST FOR SESSION 64 -31st JULY 2010, WITH JIM. MORE PLAYLISTS AT HYPERLINK "http://www.jimz.biz" www.jimz.biz, and JIM B DONOVAN on Facebook.
Well another “interesting” session. The a-bar did not fill to capacity, but it remained nicely full for the most part of the latter part of the evening, and the vibe, the requests and the general chatting was great. I was a little more “apprehensive” than usual, due to an aspect that in reality is very positive. I am now being allowed to leave my spare equipment in situ, to spare me hours having to bring it in and out, which means initially that coming on August 26th., is another night called TRACKS and GROOVES, which the Mighty AC and myself are undertaking to compliment the trip. However the spare equipment is not quite up to my usual clobber, but basically it got me through the night, with a few problems like one styus going funny on me and odd bits of feedback where the levels were not quite right. Plus with a different mixer I am not able to record the evening without it picking up my chatting on the mike, so in future playback of the recording during the week will include moi chatting as well as the music, sorry!
The next session our annual “Sod the Reading Festival” night on AUGUST 28th., sees the return for “one night only” of my old afroba evening “NO ROOM FOR SQUARES”, which means that the night will be more jazz orientated than usual. Do not let this put you off, my interpretation of “jass” is very broad, as you can tell from some of the old playlists on my website. Also I have hooked up with the “Jazz in Reading“ organisers and they are including the night on their mailing lists, so who knows what the turnout will be like. If you only like pure trip type music-if there is such a thing- then at least come along to our new night two night earlier, but be bold and try them both!
The evening was dedicated to Harry Beckett and Rammell Zee, both very different musicians but both iconic in their own fields, they will be sadly missed. BCNU-Jim.
HARRY BECKETT…METROPOLIS PART 9, started with a short tribute to one of our great trumpet players who passed away recently.

NICK DRAKE…BRYTER LATER, was asked for donovan but had none with me, so go for this, another funky folkie. I left the mike open by mistake quite a lot and this one has some “nice” crowd background sound.
THIRD BARDO…5 YEARS AHEAD OF MY TIME, was asked for question mark and the mysterons, didn’t have it so on goes another classic garage tune.
BECK…DEVILS HAIRCUT, mucho afro played tune.
LED ZEPPLIN…KASHMIR, geezer sees me thumbing thru’ tunes and stops me at zep., so on goes this classic.

RUDE 15/07/2010

CLUB RUDE -WITH VINTAGE VINYL- NEW VENUE PLAYLIST 15th JULY 2010. NOW AT THE QUEENS ARMS, GREAT KNOLLYS STREET, READING, RG1 7HH, THIRD THURSDAY EACH MONTH. MORE PLAYLISTS at www.jimz.biz and on FACEBOOK-CLUB RUDE or PAUL ANDERSON or JIM B DONOVAN and the TROJAN RECORDS WEBSITE. NEXT SESSION ON 19th AUGUST 2010.
At long last our own room, with most of the Equipment/Lighting in situ, our own Bar, plenty of Scooter/Car Parking, Dancefloor and the look and feel of the old Ricky Tick Club. Nick, Martin, Mike and Pete joined Smiler and myself on the steels of wheel and the night just “flew by”, with free BIRDS “live”cd’s being given out to those who came early, with the attendance certainly seeming to be up as well. The only problem with the playlist is it’s not exactly in the proper running order. A combination of the six of us writing the tunes down, spilling booze on the sheets, and the final indignity of my mini-disc recording not recording caused this, the nights only problem.
So onward and upward to the next sesh. when Dan and Keith return and hopefully a free Toots and the Maytals “live” cd for the first 30 through the door-
