NO ROOM FOR SQUARES 37, JAZZORISIT, VINTAGE VINYL SESSION@the afroba, 12th.JANUARY 2007. MORE PLAYLISTS at www.jimz.biz.
Woweee, the session that made up our third birthday celebration was everything you could ask for. A receptive crowd, tunes that complemented the atmosphere and just a plain good vibe. The planned night was meant to take in many styles, pay tribute to the first session three years earlier-when I was still in my teens, NOT-and cover the following:
-SOME TUNES FROM THE PREVIOUS FRIDAYS JAMES BROWN ONLY NIGHT. SEE www.my space.com/veristhe program.
-PAY TRIBUTE TO THE NEW WAXPOETICS TO INCLUDE KING CURTIS/LEE PERRY/DENNIS COFFEY/ANDY VOTEL FAVES
-NOT FORGET AHMED ERTEGAN/DEWEY REDMAN
-SKIP THROUGH THE LAST THREE YEARS PLAYLISTS ESPECIALLY THE FIRST, WHICH WAS ENCLOSED WITH THE NEWSLETTER AND TO PLAY AGAIN TUNES 500/1,000/2,000.
-SAY THANKS TO ROY AYERS FOR A GREAT NIGHT AT THE JAZZCAF THE PREVIOUS WEEK AND FOR COVERING FOR DONALD BYRD.
-ALSO THANK SIR GEORGE SHEARING FOR HIS MUCH BELATED KNIGHTHOOD.
The only problem was a bit of “deck skip” again after we thought we had solved it, and the fact that the evening was dedicated to Arthur Chisnall who founded the Eeel Pie Island jazz club in 1956 and I didn’t manage to turntable any tunes by the classic bands that played there.
The evening started a bit early-I’m getting better at setting the equipment up after over forty years of practice! and started and ended with the same tunes I played three years previously………………
