TRIP EXTRA DEC 2014

THE TRIP WITH VINTAGE VINYL AT MILK READING, THE LAST SATURDAY EACH MONTH, PLAYLIST FOR AN EXTRA SESSION ON 27/12/14. LISTEN TO THE EVENING ON MIXCLOUD IN TWO PARTS, TYPE IN JIM B. DONOVAN.

WELL THEY SAY EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED! THIS EXTRA SESSION WAS ADDED WITHOUT TOO MUCH WARNING TO COMPLEMENT THE PARTY NIGHT THE PREVIOUS SATURDAY. MOSTLY THE EARLY PART OF THE EVENING IS MADE UP OF A TRIBUTE TO THE LATE GREAT JOE COCKER, WITH A SECTION OF BRITISH BEAT ETC. ADDED.  THE LAST 6 TUNES OF JOES ARE FROM HIS AMAZING "MAD DOGS AND ENGLISH MEN" 2 LP. I EXPECTED TO KEEP IT MELLO ALL NIGHT AS WE DID NOT THINK THE BAR WOULD BE CROWDED. WRONG. SOON WE WERE IN FULL PARTY MODE, WITH THE PLACE PACKED TO THE RAFTERS. I TRIED NOT TO SPEAK TOO MUCH, AND AS USUAL DURING THE LAST  HOUR THE WHOLE THING FELL APART. WILL I NEVER LEARN! QUITE A LOT OF REQUESTS WERE PULLED FROM THE BOXES, AND I HAD A LITTLE HELP FROM A "HELPER" SO WE MOVE ON TO 2015, AND THE 10 th ANNIVERSARY OF THE NIGHT IN FEBRUARY. WHERE WILL IT ALL END? ENJOY-Jim.

SOULTIME DEC 2014

THE SECOND SESSION AT THE FOX, AND ALTHOUGH NOT QUITE AS BUSY AS THE FIRST, SEEMED TO GO DOWN VERY WELL. I HAD A FEW RECORDING PROBLEMS WITH ONE CHANNEL, SO I HAVE MIXED THIS UPLOAD DOWN TO MONO (MOST OF THE TUNES ARE RTHAT FORMAT ANYWAY) I ALSO AM NOT RECORDING MY CHAT SO THIS SHOULD RUN AS A CONTINUOUS MUSIC MIX, WITH THE ODD GAP, WHERE I DID NOT TALK OVER THE TUNE. ANDREW AND PETER GAVE ME A HAND, AND A BREAK, BY DROPPING SOME TUNES, HAVING TO GET USED TO THE STATE OF MY "FILING" SYSTEM. I TRIED TO DROP THE VOLUME TOWARDS THE END OF THE NIGHT, SO SOMETIMES THE LEVELS THERE VARY. ALSO AS USUAL I HAVE NOT LISTENED BACK TO IT YET, SO UPLOADED IT GOES WARTS AND ALL. TRIP 118

THE TRIP WITH VINTAGE VINYL. SESSION 118, 20/12/14, AT MILK, READING.

LISTEN TO THE RECORDING ON MIXCLOUD-JIM B. DONOVAN.

THIS SESSION STARTS WITH AN HOUR OR SO OF SOUL AROUND SEVEN (PLEASE EXCUSE THE "GAP" AFTER STEVIE WONDER, GREMLINS IN THE MIXER! VIRTUALLY NO CHAT FROM ME, SO A CONTINUOUS MIX, MOSTLY 70'S TUNES, AND NEARLY ALL PLAYED OFF SEVENS, WITH A BIT OF A MIXTURE OF WELL KNOWN TUNES WITH A FEW FUNK OBSCURITIES DROPPED IN).. THE REMAINDER OF THE EVENING IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT! FOR ONCE I CHOSE NOT TO PLAY ANYTHING THAT WAS "TOO CHRISMASSY", AS THE TUNES DATE SO QUICKLY. I JUST WENT FOR PARTY TUNES, WITH A FEW (DYLAN, SPRINGSTEEN, WILBURYS etc) PLAYED FOR THE HARD WORKING BAR STAFF, BECAUSE THEY REALLY WORKED THEIR SOCKS OFF. FORTUNATELY NOT MUCH CHAT FROM ME, APART FROM ANNOUNCING THAT THE BAR WAS OPEN LATER THAN USUAL, WITH TIM PLAYING AFTER ME.

TRIP 29/11/14

THE TRIP WITH VINTAGE VINYL-SESSION 117 playlist (29/11/14). LISTEN TO THE SESSION ON MIXCLOUD IN 2 PARTS-JIM B. DONOVAN.
THE NEXT SESSION IS DECEMBER 20th. BCNU, Hopefully/Jim
Well they say expect the unexpected, and the night was “almost” that. It is some time since a group turned up at MILK, that remembered me from the 80’s/90’s dj ‘ing at their own children’s birthday parties around Twyford, but the night was just that. I started the evening with an extended Soul Around Seven set, then at 8.00 moved into TRIP mixed up mode. It was fairly quiet for an hour, then slowly after 9.00, it began to fill, to the extent that by 11.00, the door staff were holding customers back! At just after 10.30, the Twyford connection was made, and I therefore “slipped”, into 80’s kids disco mode, with my fave 80’s tune Mickey getting on. Then it just went bananas, with singing along /dancing/requests etc. Lots of tunes were pulled from boxes with one lovely group spending some time doing “head photos” with record sleeves. And at the end an enormous singalong to Bonnie Tyler (my trying to clear the place tune), all being recorded. If you listen to the recording when I post it, avoid the last hour as it was chaotic, but the audio obviously will not capture the vibe which was brilliant. Someone said to me if another dj played these tune elsewhere he/she would be booed off, but apparently I am allowed to get away with it! I lost track of the amount of bookings (and there is me trying to cut back on the mobile), I was asked to do! The only problem was getting to the loo. I had to ask several customers to go for me. I am going to have it put into my contract, that I have my own loo!
I do not wish to sound complacent, but evenings like this, where you are not playing niche, and have to be ready to suit occasionally a non regular crowd, are the most gratifying, when they work, and last night certainly proved that. Getting customers to dance often is not difficult, but to conjure up a vibe that goes beyond that is not easy. Also, I am in the thick of the crowd, and really have to connect with them, unlike some dj’s who just have their heads down, and knob twiddle. This also means however that my “mixing” gets very confused as each tune does not “beat match” the previous. On the night with crowd noise it is not so apparent, but on the recording it obviously does show up.
Finally it makes me think that I did all those years, pre computer, without the need to report on gigs, record them, or share experiences, and yet I am still remembered in certain quarters.
Thanks again to all of you for the session- Jim of JIMZDISCO
