TRIP 26/02/2011

THE TRIP AT THE AFROBA-WITH VINTAGE VINYL-NORMALLY THE LAST SATURDAY EACH MONTH-PLAYLIST FOR SESSION 71 ON 26th FEBRUARY 2011. MORE PLAYLISTS AND DETAILS AT www.jimz.biz, also JIM B. DONOVAN and AFROBA GROUP ON FACEBOOK, which you are welcome to join.
Well I thought I had better listen to the full recorded playback before making these comments as the vibe on the night, due to a much lower turnout than usual, did not seem to be there. However in spite of this the recording of the night gives hardly any hint of that, other than because the bar was not full I did not play as much “up” stuff as I would have done. The plot was to play lots of Gil Scott Heron, as the artist of the night, which I did, and pay tribute to Sir George Shearing, which I also did. The intended Detroit techno segment and the Tom Moulton disco tunes I cut back on, as well as the Jungle portions , although a few got on.
The next session is a week later than usual on APRIL 2nd., with it’s sister session TRACKS and GROOVES, two nights earlier, on THURSDAY MARCH 31st, so please spread the word and let’s get these sessions back up there again. Thanks for reading this and please visit my revamped playlist site, which now has at least 20 other playlists for the trip and my other nights, at www.jim.biz, just click on LINKS-Jimz Playlists-
Thanks again-Jim.

Martin Fuggles our guest dj., who last played at the tik 44 years ago took the evening to a high after 10.00, playing the tunes that shook the club all those years ago. Most of all thanks to all of you who came to make up our biggest and most receptive audience yet. I better not name check them all in case I leave someone out, but they are all pictured on Facebook either at CLUB RUDE, or Paul Anderson, or Jim B Donovan or the various links from those pages. 60'S SOUL TIME/ALLSORTS

This is a “typical” playlist for a 60’S SOUL TIME evening all played on vintage vinyl. This one is from a private 60 th birthday party held in February 2011. The evening was not “pre-empted” other than a request to play 60’s soul, from someone who attended one of my evenings, and the vast majority of tunes were requests on the night, hence the slight motown slant. The majority of tunes however are “better known” and not too obscure, and very similar to my original 60’s club sets.
This session has been tried out at several locations on the outskirts of Reading, on a sporadic basis and we are hoping to make it more regular at a central location in Reading.
The first two hour set below was basically background music allowing for chatting, eating and drinking. The second three hour set is the full on “dancer”, with dropdowns every so often to “smootchies”.
If you are interested in either a private party or the regular sessions proper if they recommence contact jim at jimz@freenetname.co.uk
I also undertake another private party evening called ALLSORTS, where I play basically more top 40 music across the board from the 50’s to the 90’s. I recently undertook a 40’s evening , so anything is possible, either across the decades or decade specific/ particular musical styles.
Thanks for reading this, and keep on keepin’ on-
Jim.

Well another pretty “interesting” session with the bar quite full for the final three hours. The “plot”, which always gets altered was to play mostly standout tunes played last year. I picked Marvin Gaye this month with Gil Scott Heron to feature in February. Please do not forget that the afroba now runs with a “sister” session to the trip on the last Thursday called Tracks and Grooves, which is next on FEBRUARY 24th, with the trip following on FEBRUARY 26th.
